If the part number is the same, it will likely work just fine.

Not having any luck with Vans available in the pick and pull and the trucks aren't the right engine. Got a question about Mopar performance computers. One computer seems to replace all the assorted part numbers as long as the engine size is right and it has the auto transmission. It makes me think that a different part number isn't that big of a deal. I thought I had found a Mopar Performance computer brand new and it wasn't a whole lot more than the rebuilds out there so I ordered it. It took awhile, but they finally contacted me and said those have been discontinued by Chrysler. I replied that I knew that, but you have one on your website and it says in stock. Told him he needs to remove those discontinued items from the website or mark them discontinued and unavailable. Kind of unscrupulous if you ask me.
Do you guys think a Mopar performance computer would work in the van if I can find one as they cover the engine and tranny?

The trouble is.... Finding one..... They make hens teeth look downright common. That said, if you can find one, it depends on the year of your van..... I think the Mopar performance PCM's were all OBDI.

I'm in contact with a place that has one listed, but, and it's a big but in that the picture is of an earlier version ecu with the single plug and the vented front cover. Totally wrong. But it does say it fits the 96 and is the right part number, P5249955. I wanted clarification and their first reply was they wanted my VIN.

They want to make sure the PCM matches your engine/trans combo.

I'm thinking they need to make sure the picture they have posted is at least for the proper year vehicle. They came back and wanted to know which part number I was looking at and I told them the info is in my initial message to you. Not too impressed yet. I'm thinking this is just going to be another one of those fakes and they really don't have it on hand.

Are you sure about the part number? Usually it is an 8-digit part number that starts with either 04 or 56.

I think that is for the regular units and not the Mopar performance. There's several places on the net with the info and they all show the same number.

I just got a reply from the company that had it listed. They said it had been discontinued and is being removed from their catalog.

Just took several decades for them to realize the part had been discontinued, If you don't have it in your inventory then don't list it in your catalog, and read what people write to you instead of requesting information that is already been provided. Utter incompetence

Sorry for the rant.

Have you tried using P04886781 for the part number instead of P5249955?
I ask because I found one on ebay and the P5249955 number is on the emissions exempt sticker, but the Chrysler part number on the PCM sticker is P04886781.

Here is the eBay listing:
1996 Dodge Ram 5.2L Mopar ECU P5249955, Emission Exempt | eBay

Using the new number, I found this one where they program it to your VIN.
1996 Dodge Ram Truck 5.2L - PCM ECM ECU | 04886781 | Flagship One (fs1inc.com)
