2.4L timing belts
Hi all
I have a questune about my 1997 2.4L 4cyl engine in my stratus
is this engine the type that when the timing belt breaks it will smash the pistons into the valves? ( interference head )
and secondly is a timing belt difficult to change in these engines?
thanks for the help

i have a 2.4 and have replaced mine twice. It is a ZERO clearence engine, so be very very careful you could damage it easily. Yes, it's kinda hard to change. The second time i brought it into a shop because i felt the extra money was worth not dealing with the time it took with my simple garage tools.
yes the 2.4L engine is an interference engine, if the car is running under load and the belt brakes the valves usually bend...i have seen several instances where the customer has been ideling when the belt goes and not effect the valves, but i have also seen a cold nostart condition, when the car drove fine when turned off the prior night and then tried to start in the am and the belt brakes andbent valves as well.be aware that chrysler has a new desinged belt tensioner again and requires a new inner timing cover set as well...comes as a kiti have done several belt replacements and if you arent sure it is always beneficial to have a knowledgeable tech perform the repairs...
took it to a dealer,
about this new tensioner does that have to be replaced on this timeing belt change or is it a "change if needed item "
cause they never said anything about changing the tensioner at the chrysler dealer.
but i dont trust the dealership and i dont want it to eat away my new timing belt.
cheers
