It would be hard to race an 04 camaro since they quit making them in 02. I see how a lot of you guys claim to beat camaors, but my 99 Z-28 has yet to see any taillights, including the guys that have spent a bunch of money. Yes it is nearly stock, chipped and a cold air intake only. 12.8 on street tires 12.1 on drag radials. I respect your cars for what they are, but lets face it guys, you cant make as much power as a V-8

 

Cute lil racing story:

My 15 year old daughter and I are tooling down the interstate one night last week. It is about 9:00 and the road is dead. Out of my side mirror, I see a car hanging out there and not really moving. The next thing I know, he shoots up beside me and just coasts right along with me.

My daughter: What’s he doing, dad?

Me: He’s wanting to race, hun.

My daughter: OH BOY!!! We get to race him??????

Me: NO WAY. I am not even racing with you in this car. PERIOD.

Daughter: Pleeeeease dad,,,I know you can take him.

Me: I dunno hun,,,,it’s a WRX and those things are pretty quick.

The guy then floors it and moves on past me. Next thing I know, he drifts back to where I am and starts goosing it again trying to goad me into running. Again, I show incredible restraint. He pops on ahead but only about 300 yards, but then he again comes back to where I am. He is now alongside me in the left lane.

My daughter: Look dad! The passenger is rolling his window down!

I then look over at him and I TRY yelling “I can’t, I have a small rider in the car.� My daughter did not like being referred to as a small rider. My daughter is saying something, but my mind is just racing right now. My window is down and his window is down. I still don’t want to race. He starts honking his horn. When the third beep went off, I slammed it into third and we are off. I got the jump on him, because I am assuming that he didn’t think I would race this time. Both cars, with the windows down, are just screaming. I pull about 3 car lengths on him and look down and see that we are at 125 mph. I snap back into reality and shut down and the WRX just sailed past me.

My daughter was like, “WE WON…WE WON!!!�

And then a HUGE slab of guilt hit on me. I told my kiddo, “I am so sorry that you got to see a parent behave like I just did. I should not have been behaving like a kid and you deserve a LOT better example in life than the one I just set for you. Racing is bad….and people die from it. I should have been a better parent and not exposed you to anything like this.�

Dead silence in the car. She finally just looks at me and says, “Dad,,,,quit being dramatic. It was a race. I’m not going to ever race, and besides, we won.� I couldn’t help but laugh. Fun night, actually.

BTW, nice story Word. I have an 11 yr old daughter and find it quite challenging to act "grown-up" all the time. They are a hoot though.

 

I read this entire thread backwards trying to figure out WHO smoked an "04" SS Camaro.....until I got to the top of the first page and realized it was a typo Paul made. LMAO Damn...shouldve done that in the first place.

It has alot to do with the driver also...keep that in mind Jim. You could have a 500 horsepower car and a 250 horsepower car and the 250 could win if the 500 cant shift, mis-shifts, doesnt know how to launch, bad conditions, etc etc etc

And many SRTs CAN make as much power as a V8, if not more. And they are. Theres SRTs with 400 and 500+ horsepower to the wheels. Yes with mods, but still a 4 banger with that kind of output isn't half bad.

 

I DONT BELIEVE ANY Z28 IS DOING ANY WHERE NEAR A 12 SECOND 1/4 MILE WITH ONLY A CHIP AND AN INTAKE THAT IS A LOAD OF CRAP WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING DUDE

 

05 SRT stock form 1997 z-28 boasts quarter mile times of 13.1 outta a manual transmission...the same is true w/ a trans am. So 12s are very common with just a chip and opened up intake...Not very many srt-4s can even do 13.1s stock w/ out some serious traction and a little add-ons.

 

Well - thank you mr. Bowtie. This makes a good update thread. A lot of us are in a different place in terms of power than we were when this thread started. Let's all quote ourselves and include a new list based on another year+ of driving.

Here is my "on track" experience a year and a month and a few mods later(Very limited track experience at best, but this is every run.)(note: I have never run at the track prior to this):

1-6 at Island Dragway, NJ---October 23rd/ about 45 degrees:
1) LOSS - Older fox body stang on slicks - First run ever(would have beat him with any other run I have made since then. 13.78 to 13.452 - he got me
2) WIN - Camaro on drag radials - beat him by .0228 at the finish. me-13.334 him-13.269 but I got him off the line by.101
3) LOSS - Drag prepped Camaro on slicks - duh - me-13.383 him-12.273
4) LOSS - '65 or '66 GTO on slicks - he got me by .0723 at the line - me-13.305 him-12.737
5) WIN - Same GTO on slicks - I got him by .0556 at the line with a better launch me-13.463 him-13.247
6) WIN - '03 Mustang COBRA on drag radials - got him by .5596 the the finish. me-13.278 him-13.441

7&8 were at night at Cecil county, MD---November 11th, at 37 degrees f
7) WIN - PT Cruiser with AGP 50 trim on Drag radials - got him at the finish by .0691 me-13.505[:'(] him-13.319 but I launched better
8) WIN - WRX with some work done. - beat him by 2.1496 at the finish --- me-13.463 him-15.787

9&10 were at ATCO raceway, NJ---November 13th at 35-45 degrees f
9) WIN - some wierd hybrid suv thing with 14 inch mickey thompsons and a loud bark but no bite - took him by .4408 at the finish
me-13.478 him-14.320
10) WIN - POS old 80's Camaro v-8 - too pathetic for words - beat him by 4.0865 ----- me-13.639 him-17.065

7 wins, 3 losses

I will admit that a v-8 has more potential than an I-4. DUH. But there are many, many srt-4's out there that will hand your camaro it's ***. Now if you want to go slap a turbo, some nitrous, and some slicks, and a drag suspension, plus a trans brake on there and you will roast any fwd car in the 1/4, as you will be posting times in the 10's without breaking a sweat.

05dodgesrt4, he might just be correct, my buddy is in about the same place in his Camaro with similar setup. You just can't cut a 1.5 60ft off the line like a camaro can. If you threw a 1.5 in front of a stock srt-4's 13.8, it would be running 13.2 or better. 60 foot times make a big difference in the 1/4. Try racing the same 12.8 second camaro from a roll, though and you'll probably whoop him.

 

Not really, highrevr...they actually ran about 14.1 at best with the outdated lt1 which was in place through '97. In '98 they went to a version of the ls1 used in the vette, but still were hard pressed to do better than 13.9-14.0 even with the addl torque available due to the longer stroke and smaller bore. Your listed time of 13.1 would be good for a stock 97 'vette with an ls1. A 93-97 z28 oughtta put you in the low 14's maybe high 13's if you are lucky. A '97-98 ss will get you 13.6 or so stock. An srt-4 stock oughtta be pretty comparable with any of those.

 

im new to this web site. I do alot of strett racing and I haven't seen to many cars run with srt 4 yet. I have raced

(5) mustangs GT (some with work done and some not, every one by at least a car)
(2) jetta 1.8T ( not even a race)
F-350 (thought he was bad but not)
ss camaro (it was from a 50 mph roll, still not a chance)
steeda mustang (it was about a 50 mph roll, still can't keep up)
PT crusier turbo (that was a joke)
sho taurus turbo (talk so much junk and got his A$$ beat)

I haven't had nothing to keep up yet!!!!!
