This is something I will find out soon enough for myself as well.
My brother has a 1996 Grand Am with a 3.4 V-6 and I will put my SOHC 2.0 up against him soon. Honestly the Grand Am puts most of its power down off the line so plan on getting smoked a little bit or being even with the Grand Am till about 30mph when the high revs take over and Win the race for the Neon
The Grand Am is a powerfull car but flooring it at 35mph it lacks thequickness my Neon has and therfore I think the Neon takes the race at 40mph or above. The Grand Am launches very good off the line, but so does my SOHC now after the timing belt change
I would suspect the Grand Am pulls 2 car lengths on you off the line then the race should be yours as the RPM's stay above 3000 on the Neon. No need to make excuses for the Grand Am its got good gearing and a 4 speed automatic plus a powerfull V-6.
Should be a good race but the Neon pulls the upset.

Yeah but thats a 3.8 V-6 not to mention its a 2004 car aginst a late 90's Neon, not a very big lead
Especially when you factor in engine displacment the Neon has remarkable performance even if it loses.
We're talking about 3.4ltr Grand Ams having game against our Neons not 3.8s : )
If I wanted to be an *** holeI could compare the 3.8liter 2004 Grand Am to the 20042.4 SRT 4 Neon and I garuntee the SRT4 Smokes the Grand Am.
I say to compare fair compare a time period correct car
I also think maybe you were half asleep when you raced that Grand Am, should be no problem to smoke those.

2nd gens weigh more
im just guessing you have a 2nd gen by youruser name
if boxer shifts good there is no way a heavy v6 automaticpontiac will win unless it's modded...btw they have 200-205 torque so they say but i think it's weight will help you(strip your audio out for a day

Well, let's compare the two cars shall we...
2004 Pontiac Grand Am ATX - 170-185hp/210ftlbs torque - 3100lbs
1998 Dodge Neon SOHC MTX - 132hp/129ftlbs torque - 2350lbs (ballpark)
So based on this alone, the race is fairly even. What the Grand Am has in HP/Torque, the Neon makes up for with weighing less. Both cars have 1/4 mile times in the 16'sas well.
Honestly, this is a driver's race, and who gets the best launch is most likely to win. The extra 80lbs of torqueis really what gives the Grand Am the slight edge in my opinion.
