2013 Dodge Challenger Daytona Conversion

Huge rear wing and angular nose of the classic Charger Daytona give this Challenger supreme aerodynamics.

Back in 1969, the Dodge Charger Daytona was the hottest entry in NASCAR. With the gigantic rear wing and pointed nose, the Mopar “wing car” would eventually be joined by a Plymouth Superbird with a similar look to dominate the series. In fact, the exterior design of the Daytona and Superbird were quickly banned from NASCAR, but before that happened, the Chrysler Group offered up road-going versions of each car. Those street legal wing cars have become pricy collectables in the modern market, but some owners of modern Dodge Challengers have applied body kits to recreate the Daytona look.

While flipping through the vehicle listings on Motorious.com, we came across a 2013 Dodge Challenger with a modern Daytona package that has been posted for sale by GAA Classic Cars Auction in Greensboro, North Carolina. The key feature is the exterior body kit, but for anyone who wants a heavily customized 2013 Challenger with the wing car look, this is a rare chance to buy a complete vehicle.

The details on this car are fairly short, but we can see from the pictures that this 2013 Dodge Challenger R/T has been fitted with an elaborate Daytona conversion package. The ad does not state who made this kit, but it looks a great deal like the package offered by Heide Performance Products in Michigan. This includes the angular nose cone, the huge rear wing, unique side skirts and the prominent rear diffuser, all of which look identical to the Heide kit. The outside is finished off with a Hellcat-style hood, aftermarket 20-inch wheels wrapped in Goodyear rubber and a custom taillight panel.

It should be noted that the Heide Performance Products Daytona kit was designed to offer the best possible aerodynamics. This kit was used by several modern Challenger owners who participated in land speed record attempts, with one of these kitted-up cars going well over 200 miles per hour on the Bonneville Salt Flats. For most owners, the look is the key attraction, but this kit has been wind tunnel tested to offer superior high speed aerodynamics.

On the inside, this Challenger Daytona features a custom white leather seating layout with orange trim on the door panels, the center console and the piping on the seats. Against the black dash and carpeting, the bright white-and-orange seats, door panels and console really pop in the normally-dark cabin.

Finally, this Challenger-turned-Daytona has a Seven-speaker Boston Acoustics sound system, fed by a 368-watt amplifier and controlled by the 6.5-inch touchscreen in the dash. The front seats are power controlled, there are audio controls on the steering wheel, along with paddle shifters.

Hemi Power

Like the classic Dodge Charge Daytona, this Challenger is powered by a Hemi V8, but unlike the 426-cubic inch, 7.0-liter Hemi of the classic car, this winged warrior is powered by a modern 5.7-liter Hemi. This engine delivers 372 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, with a 5-speed automatic transmission handling the power transfer from the engine to the rear wheels.

We don’t know how much this Challenger will sell for with its custom interior and Daytona body kit, but with less than 1,900 miles, this 2013 Dodge muscle car is practically new. More importantly, the odds are incredible that the next owner will never have to worry about someone with the same car showing up at a show.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
