Default 96 3.9 AX-15 vs. 99 3.9 AX-15

Hi, is there a difference between 96 vs. 99 AX-15s for the 3.9? I am seeing them a lot cheaper and more readily available on Car-Part. Thanks in advance.

I suspect the newer ones won't have the provision for the VSS in the output tailhousing. (2wd.)

It looks like what appears to be a freeze plug is at the provision (picture below). Can that be knocked out and the VSS installed there? Thanks again.

Maybe. Need to check the output shaft, and see if the drive gear is there, or if the shaft even has a provision for it. (my guesses would be no, and maybe.)

Appreciate the help, this place has been super helpful for me progressing my V8 swap. I think I will just use the 96 AX-15 to avoid having to swap tailshafts etc. as I do not have a 3.9 AX-15 around for testing.

One more question about this; does the VSS only send a signal to the speedometer or does it play other (more important) roles as well such as fueling, load, etc? Reason being these 97+ AX15s look very tempting at very low mileage. If it just feeds the speedometer I can use a GPS speedometer. Thanks again.

It also sends speed info to the PCM, yes. Or so my understanding is.

It IS fed into connector B27 of the PCM for a 1996 Dakota.

Fair enough, first gen AX-15 it is. Thanks again for the tech.
