You can use a newer one with some messing about. I have a 98 case on my truck. The newer cases have better internals for shifting on the fly at higher speed. You need to mess with some vacuum stuff to get it to function properly but it wasn't too bad.

Need that VSS on the tailshaft of the t-case though, that's where the 95 gets its speedometer reading from. 98 and up won't have it.

Yeah you do. When I did mine I disassembled both and mixed and matched pieces to make it work. The T case I had on hand from a full sized 98 ram was basically the same case minus some ports, so I mostly swapped the guts out of the one into my case which was still good with bad internals.

As long as the sensors are all the same the T cases from both auto/manual bolt on the same. They're interchangeable. It would depend on the sensor differences between the ram and dakota cases. The 98 ram one I used had a bunch of different vacuum stuff on it.

There should be a round tag on the case with a stamped number on it. If that matches your case then it's the same internally and the sensors should be the same.
