So what are you doing?

Finally got the bed off with the help of my stepson.
Finally got the tank cleaned off.
Finally got out there to swap the pumps.
And discovered that my fuel tank was ... empty.
Reservoir was dry, as was where it sits. There WAS a small amount of gas at the front of the tank. But none where the fuel pump was.
I cannot emphasize how dumb I feel at this moment.
Well, the rebuild fuel pump assembly SHOULD have a working fuel gauge sending unit ...

I'd point and laugh if I hadn't done the same thing. I was going to sell a truck cheap once and the guy wanted it even cheaper. I didn't sell it, put some fuel in and it fired right up.

I fixed the fuel gauge on my 87 when I bought it. A wire had corroded between the sender and the firewall connector. All the wires in the back are black and will need replaced. I cleaned the contact on the sending unit and put it back in. You can check them with an ohm meter.
I first checked the cluster gauge with a chevy sending unit I had, it is wrong for the ohms but triggers a response. Think it would only go to half tank.

Rebuilt fuel pump assembly (with new Bosch fuel pump) is now in truck.
4 gallons of gas added.
Truck starts, idles nicely.
Set timing to about 15* BTDC; I'm going to squeeze every erg I can out of the gasoline I'll be running.
Still need to finish pressure washing the underside and upperside of the bed, then put the bed back on, then the topper.
But it's progressing.

Stepson helped me put the bed on Thursday (placing it).
I got all nine bolts (eight into frame or frame horns; one for the ground wires) tightened down and blue Loktite'ed . I also made sure the wiring was plugged back in for both tail lights.
Time to figure out what size hole to drill for the slide switch and do the bed lights, methinks, before the camper top goes back on.
