Default Help please dads about to move and everything i try wont fix it

I am 15 and a half i bought a 1985 d150 318 automatic and when i was driving down the road i lost power going up hills no matter how much gas i gave it and then i had driven 35 miles and i went through a green light and all of a sudden it shot way up in rpms and i no longer had anygears i had it towed home and every once in a while it will drive but as soon as i touch the brakes it quites driving and wont go again it usually goes in the mornings when its cold or i havent touched it in 3 or 4 days ive owned it a month

so would it run but just not move after the rpm went up or did it quit running? to me it almost sounds like you are having a fuel related issue or maybe a vacuum leak.

Truck never died i walked out and turned the key this afternoon didnt even touch the gas and it fired right up

Never died i went out today and turned the key didnt even touch the gas and it started at 18 degrees outside

have you checked the transmission fluid level with the transmission in neutral? if the truck will run but don't want to move then you are most likely running low.

I checked the fluid but its a little high cause i put more in it

but did you check it with the transmission in neutral? makes a huge difference since the transmissions do not pump fluid in park but they pump fluid in every other position.

Trans has to be hot and idling in neutral to check.
May get lucky by doing a filter and fluid change, but it sounds toasted.

Well the guy i bought it from changed the filter and it was just on the end of the dipstick and i drove it 35 miles and it did what was above and i was thinking torque converter
