Default 46RE tranny service! Maybe upgrades?

So I'm due for the next tranny service, and I decided to do it myself this time. '97 model Ram 2500 with the 46RE. Still works perfect, and never had a prob to date with it, even @ 109K. So, I'm thinking about some upgrades while I change the fluid and filter. Trying to make this trans last as long as possible before it will need to be rebuilt. I wanna use ATF +4 fluid correct? This will be my first attempt screwing with the trans, so can you fellas guide me through how to do all this?

1. Just change the fluid a filter, call it a day.

2. New fluid, filter, and deep trans deep, new gasket.

3. Something different, please explain.

Lemme know what ya'll would do and why. THX!

A deep pan is never a bad idea. If you have the cash, go for it. Heat is one of the biggest enemies of transmissions, and these guys weren't the best from the factory.

If you aren't having any issues with it, fluid (yes, atf +4) filter, gasket, and deep pan will be good.

if you haven't done the check valve delete yet, do it now.

If you have issues with TCC engage, and other shifting oddities, sonnax sure cure. (just under 300 bucks for that though... not cheap.)

For insurance, possibly change to the GM style pressure regulator solenoid, and pressure transducer? (again, not cheap. if it isn't currently a problem, not a real high priority.)

Flush the cooler lines? NOT the whole trans......

So what is the check valve delete and why should i do it?

No issues with the TCC and solenoid. No issues at all with my trans, really is still working excellent. Just wanna do what I can to keep that streak up.

How do I flush the cooler lines? Compressor? And I just want to empty and replace the fluid in the pan right? Not 'flush it' How many quarts does the auto 46RE take? And yes I know I need to add extra fluid with a deep pan.

Shift kit? I dunno about that...I like smooth silk like shifting.

I don't know a thing about transmissions. I feel if it ain't broke...don't fix it. I just had my tranny flushed with ATF+4 and had a new filter installed. My recommendation would be just flush the tranny and change the filter and do nothing else.

Well, I'm not 'fixing' anything. Just preventative maintanence for safe measure. And no offense bro, but how can you recommend me to do something that you say you don't know anything about? Just saying...

Check valve= death of many a transmission.

https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...ve-delete.html

If you don't want to make it yourself this site sells one pre-made. It's a little more than halfway down the page.

http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm

You might have to wait 10 seconds or so after doing this mod for the torque converter to fill up with fluid but your tranny will thank you.

Thanks for the above link posted bro. That was a really good thread DIY from aim! Learned alot about the check valve.

So, I'm thinking of taking HeyYou's suggestion and doing the fluid change, filter, gasket, deep pan, and check valve delete.

Anyone have info on the best place to buy quality/affordable parts i need to do this?

Fluid- Napa
Filter/Gasket- Mopar (dealership)
Deep Pan & Check Valve Delete - from transmissioncenter

Probably where I will purchase the above unless ya'll know of anywhere better.

Thanks for the input so far guys!

Does your deep pan come with a drain plug? Makes doing the job next time MUCH less messy.

LOL Exactly! I guess I am still shopping for a pan that has one. Won't buy a pan that doesn't have a drain plug. Also, do you think it would be wise to adjust the bands? I have heard this has hurt the trans more than it does good, especially since my trans running smoothly with no probs
