Default 5.2 Dakota 99 plenum gasket replacement

Did mine some time ago, now just posting some pics.

Posted some more info here: 05.05.2016
https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...ml#post3295723

This is my 5.2 V8 dakota 99 @ 59,000 miles

No need to touch the radiator

Original gasket still in one piece, not warped

Plenum gasket was stuck to the steel pan and not to the aluminum intake.

Plenum really sticky and dirty

In my case the OEM plenum bolts were not long and did bottom without the original steel pan

I kept the OEM steel plenum pan and used a small amount of black permatex on both sides of the gasket and bolts.
Plenum pan bolts torque feels not enough but I torqued to specs and re-checked twice.
Did seal good but I think it was not leaking before.

Mine you couldn't find where it was leaking either but it definitely was. I went with the Hughes kit, I think the different expansion/contraction rates between the two metals may have had something to do with it leaking in the first place.

Nope. The difference in expansion is so incredibly tiny, it simply doesn't matter.

Perhaps changes in the materials used and manufacture details over the years like the gasket and the depth of the threads / bolts all contribute to make them leak but some go earlier than others, in my case I believe the amount of motor oil found on the plenum pan really came from the PCV

One thing that caught my eye on this is that when I took it apart the original plenum gasket was stuck to the steel pan like one piece and came off the aluminum really easy so if it was leaking should be between the aluminum plenum and the gasket, in your case, using the hughes kit did u use a felpro gasket? did u put some thread lock on the bolts? Matt Payne had to re-do all this because the bolts got loose after 9 months. He made a real nice video on this:
I know aluminum versus aluminum should be better but the gasket has to seal it good and expand at the same rates too.

Wow, that was really asking for attention, you know how many miles? Could you tell if the gasket came off the steel pan easy or it was stuck in some areas?

Default did mine a year ago

it was not blown out but you could tell in two places the gasket was not sandwiched enough and oil was seeping through. i have been enjoying much less oil consumption. glad i found this site and lots of info. Our 01, as original owners, is staying in the family indefinitely.

I bought the truck from original owner and he said it had been going on for a few years, knew right away from experience that it was the plenum gasket
I bought truck with 120k so probably at 110k give or take from his description..

had friend of mine do work for me due to spine issues but he said it basically pulled right off with minimal scraping..
