I got an Elm327 and then got some free software for my laptop. And I hooked it up and connected to it and worked like a charm!! It read a bunch of sensor data(I didn't have codes) but the free version only lets you read one sensor at a time. That's about it really.
Now if I could just find the best software to get that would allow me to do the most.
The Bluetooth thing only cost like 13 bucks shipped, and my laptop I already had. So this is quite cost effective. However, to get get could software you gotta she'll out a little cash

Plug it into another vehicle (same model as it was purhased for) and see if it uploads or downlods. I suspect it will gove (VIN not matching" error.
I am looking for some advice on a scan-tool for reading the transmission temp PID for two vehicles i own.
The Rides:
1) 2006 dodge Ram 1500 SLT with 545RFE and 4.7L
2) 2008 dodge Grand Caravan SE with 4 speed 3.3L
Needs:
primary purpose for higher end scantool is i want to see the transmission temp. PID for both above vehicles. and i would like to see the O2 sensor data on the ram there is an intermittent problem with it throwing code P0420.
but here is the wish list.
1) read transmission temperature
2) read/test/live data on O2 sensors
3) read ABS/SRS trouble codes
4) ability to update
Options:
1) innova pro tools, called there technical rep. no product that can help
2) called launch.... but they are too disorganized and had terrible customer service so i gave up on them. (website kinda looks like over sea garbage)
3) OTC, called and emailed them they recommended the Nemisys 3822.
4) Tried Autel (autolink) but their tech was on the road and never called or emailed back (lousy customer service)
5) Found an older model Nemisys otc 3797M10 (2010) for almost half the cost of the newer 3822. the OTC guy said it should work for my purposes. the 3822 replaces the 3797, so there goes the update able options
Question's:
1) has anyone used the OTC Nemisys 3797? comments on it? can it still be updated?
2) has anyone used the OTC Nemisys 3822? comments?
3) does anyone know how i can find the PID realtime reading for transmission temperature? is it numbered?

I've used a OTC Monitor 4000 Enhanced, it can do all of that but you have to buy software upgrades which aren't cheap to cover more years. It does OBD1 and 2, the one I've borrowed is up to 1996 and some 1997. It can read all live data, do fuel sync reset, idle reset, testing, etc. Fairly comprehensive. Now what I don't know is if it can read ABS or SIR/SRS codes. I've got a ABS light on but have ignored it cause it's simply not getting a signal from the rear axle (dshaft isn't hooked up). For the ABS system, the codes on some Dodges can be read by jumpering certain wires and counting the flashes of the (I think) ABS light.
VW, I will check to see of the MTG 2500 will read SRS data. Don't know as I haven't needed to check. I'll let you know.
