Default Which Tranny?

Hey all,
Been looking at the PATC web site and am not sure if a Viper tranny is enough or if I should get the Mega Viper? The Viper is good to 500HP and the Mega to 700HP. I don't think a 408 or 426 would make 500HP unless I was to add some juice to it or forced induction. I don't see me every using Nitrous and I am not building a forced induction engine so I don't see me doing that either.

So which do you think will be ok? Get the Viper or Mega Viper? This is a 46RE of course.

A good tuned 408 can make up to 475hp at the crank (what PIE dyno sheets show anyway), what's the cost diff between the two?

That's crazy... Might have to look into the future possibility of a 408

I had not paid attention to his numbers before. I was guessing a 408 would be 425 to 450 max. Making 475 sounds GREAT!! So a Mega Viper sounds better.

Base price numbers a Mega Viper is $400 more than the Viper. I need to add all the extra stuff and see.

Go for the mega viper, and then you won't need to worry about the trans.

Well I had a long conversation with PATC today about which tranny and so on. I was thinking I would be spending around $3,300 on a tranny but that got blownout of the water today. The tech I spoke with said I need a Mega Viper transmission but that I should also add billet input and intermediate shaft. His reasoning was the weight of my rig combined with the large tires can cause enough shock load to break the shafts.
So I am looking at $4,800 for this tranny which eats up all the funds I have at this point. I really had hoped I might have $1,000 or more left over for other things.

How much engine do you want to put in front of the trans?

I told him I had plans to make my 360 into a 408 stroker at some point. So I wanted the tranny to hold up to any future mods I might do. But I know I don't ever plan on having a 800HP engine. I think PATC isn't going to get my business for this tranny. They don't have a core charge which is a good thing because I don't have a 46RE to send back to them. So now I've got to find another shop that I can get a tranny from without being raped on core charges.

What type of off-roading do you do? If you aren't blasting thru mud regularly, I would think the mega viper would be more than adequate to the task for ya. The guy one the phone is probably commission based salary.

From what I read, their 46RE Mega Viper goes for $2800, and is rated for 700 HP. I wonder where the extra $2k came from.
