picking up a crapsman lawn tractor sunday. costing me 50 bucks, but it supposedly has a blown motor. i already sourced a motor just in case.
gonna use it to pull the logs out of the woods that ive cut down!

im looking forward to having it, its going to be getting modded a bit, larger tires, stronger hitch setup, to support the weight of the logs, and a potential pulley swap for low end torque.
this one only has 220 hours on it, so its fairly new... no mower deck, and supposedly the owner F-I-L forgot to check the oil, and it threw a rod.. we shall see!

id say its under 10 years old. ill know more sunday!
Years ago I got an Ariens 12/32 for $50 because the previous owner had broken the rod and it made a hole in the side of the engine.
He had another rod and piston from another Briggs 12 horse engine but had let it sit for somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 years and grass had grown up around it pretty badly.
I pulled it out put it on my trailer and took it home. Since it was new to me I got on it right away. Ihad a 16 horse engine I was planning to put on it but that was just to big so I put the spare piston and rod in the broken engine and put a hunk of fender metal and a rubber patch on the hole in the side.
I was quite surprised when the engine not only started but ran and more surprised when it continued to start and run for the next 8 years.
The mower deck was repaired several times including new spindles once, and several idler pulleys. Along with several belts for the blades as well. It still had the original main belt though. I finally junked it when the transaxle went bad.
My younger brother has a Sears garden tractor that has had a few modifications in its life time. At one time it had a mower deck under it but its built more like a Cub Cadet or Wheel Horse with 3” C frame rails, it has a 16 horsepower Kohler engine in it now I'm not sure where he got the flywheel but it takes the same clutch disk and throw out bearing as my 6 cylinder '65 Ford Fairlane did. It has a hand clutch and the bell housing looks a lot like what we had on the old 4 cylinder Hercules stationary engine all those years ago. It has a PTO pulley just like the Hercules had. To accommodate that he had to lengthen the frame a foot or more. We usedto use the Hercules to run the buzz saw and a few other things back in the day.
I think he used the three speed transmission out of a Ford too. The rear axle is definitely a cut down Ford product.
It can be a bugger to start but once its going its good to go for as long as the gas lasts. It does not have electric start just a pull rope. He uses it like a jammer in the woods. He even has a small removable jammer mast on the back of it.The jammer has a 12V electric wench with cable to help move the logs. It has 15” wheels with mud and snow tread tires on the back.
It looks a little silly with the garden tractor fenders with half the tire tread sticking out from under.
As far as I know the front tires and wheels are original size so when he turns sometimes they tend to plow into the ground if its soft out. He put a few inches of lift between the front axle and the front of the frame so it sets pretty level.

Why have we not gotten a picture of this
I don't have any pictures of it and he does not have the internet where he lives. He doesn't even have grid power. He gets by with solar panels and a gas fired generator.
I'll see if I can get him to send some pictures though.
