Just got the call from the shop. It was just as I suspected. The broken piece was from the retainer clip that holds the springs in place. When it broke, the spring pack came loose, and the center section almost came out of the housing. Basically everything I said the day I looked at it myself and started this thread. They are ordering the Auburn rebuild kit today, and should have it all back together by mid next week (with 4.56's).

Just out of curiousity incase I ever have to rebuild my Auburn which I hope I don't. How much is the rebuild kit and whats labor on that? I was told by a few people when I got mine you can't rebuild it but a few others said you could so I didn't know if you could or not.

This place got the rebuid kit for $135 (that $170 was the quote I got from another place in town I had called). They said it would add 1 hour of labor to the gear install. Not sure what labor would be if you weren't also doing a gear install.

On the Auburn site they rate that lsd for up to a max of 36" tires.
Are those tires bigger than 35"?

They are just 35's. Could the fact that they are mud terrain tires cause more stress on the limited slip then say a street oriented tire?

Talked to Auburn. They said the failure I had is actually a known problem they have seen from the units sold a few years back (AG1505 is the part# of my limited slip that broke). They have since replaced that design with a new one, and it is part# AG542070. The new unit is much better, and supposedly has no issues like this. The rebuild kit I am getting comes with all the components from this new part#, so I should be good to go.

For those that are interested and like the information, here is a good picture of the Auburn unit I have (or similar). The piece that broke on mine came off one of the spring retainers (in green).
