I posted a picture of mine on here a few months back. My hood mount works great. I would recommend it. I'm sure people on here will whine about the ground plane not being "ideal" when mounted there, but it works great for me.

i originally had the gold pa horn from a local truck stop it was made by diesel. but when i got a hole in the horn, i just cut the wire, and bought a 25w power horn from radio shack, and spliced the wires together, then used the plug to plug it into the back of my radio. the power horn was like 30 bucks, but it was worth it, its outlasted that little horn i had, and i have mine slid right behind my bumper on the drivers side, you can see it in some of my pics. it is weather resistant as well. iiits held up pretty good considering where its at.

I have used the fiberglass antennas like the fire stick and from what I have experienced and been told is that with fiberglass you won't get the same amount of vibration as you do with a steel whip. As in you won't be able to hear as well. Not the way of clarity but as in sensitivity. A steel whip is more sensitive than fiberglass making reception different. Now you don't have to have a huge whip like mine but you can go smaller. I will agree a long whip will get in the way. But I just put mine down military style when I'm going to a parking garage or where I know there is low clearance.
