Yes, it can. Fix the damned thing! Even if you're sporting a gutted cat so it won't lead to cracked cylinder heads, that does nothing to prevent stretched valves which will eventually happen if you don't restore good oil control.

Gotcha. I'm hoping to have the money together in the next month or two to get it fixed, I was quoted $495 labor for the plenum, plugs, wires, cap & rotor, and a new thermostat. I'm buying the parts piece by piece when I have the funds.

Normally I would, but I've never been that far into an engine, and I have no one to help me this time, so I'd be doing it by my self, which scares me a bit. Sadly this is my only vehicle right now, so if I fubar it, I can't go to work, school, etc, so that's a major concern as well.

I would do mine myself, I have tihe tools and the garage, etc and probably could, but it just looks like such a pia and I really don't have the time to dedicate to it. I'd gladly pay for someone else to do it, as long as it's not $500. Hell, I'd even help and provide the beer. Anyone interested? Muzz, where you at in central Va?

Charlottesville. I too would be willing to chip in on this lol. I really need to get the plenum done, it'll happen one way or another.

Default And this is why I work on my own junk...

So I finally got around to looking for these check valves. Lo and behold, the one off the manifold was resting gently on top of the valve cover. Someone has obviously been into this truck...

So my question is this: Would such a vacuum leak (i.e. open port on the manifold) explain erratic shift patterns in any way? It tends to shift 1,2,3,2,3,4,5...

Can't believe I wasn't getting a CEL, at least a lean code or something...

I work at VT and would love to watch this plenum fix! me and a buddy of mine fixed mine almost a year ago! I am now fighting this vacuum problem. Going out in just a minute to find out if I've got two check valves on this 95. It appears that one of my check valves was improperly located. Read through this thread and from what I can tell from a line diagram, is that no check valve should be on the line that comes out of intake on passenger side and goes to (vents,4x4, speed control) correct? The only two cv's I see in the diagram are the ones at the TB and the one near the intake manifold port but they both are looped together. coming out of intake, tee'ing to TB and then to evap canister.
Is my thinking correct on this because that is not where I found one of these cv's. I'm going to see if I can find another right now!

Incorrect. There should be a check valve there.
