I would run like hell from any shop that can quote me what a rebuild would cost *WITHOUT* having dismantled the transmission. There are no guarantees what what is or isn't torn up until every nut and bolt have been removed and every part and piece inspected. What I do is ask for a ballpark figure. eg. Best case scenario and worst case scenario. That way, I know what I'm in for.

Re-read my post. NO ONE can give an accurate quote what a rebuild will cost until the transmission is completely dismantled. If someone says, "Yeah, I can rebuilt your transmission for $1,500" he either takes shortcuts or works for next to nothing, which goes back to taking short cuts.

I guess the OP needs to tow his truck up to Michigan and git 'r done... Any Volunteers (slinks off into the ether) ????
Since I don't see any hands up, the OP is gonna have to pay East Coast pricing, which I'm sure is pretty accurate.
At least hes not on the west coast, where labor's about 100 bucks an hour, maybe more.
Be sure and post up when you get your truck back, and let us know how it runs.
VW and Dodge, I would've tossed in the hooker...but I'm a salesman, not a pimp.

Okay well i'm letting you know that I had mine qouted at 1200 and paid 1450. The guy does nothing but transmissions and builds all our work trucks trans, and those trucks get the hell beat outa them, and they are still running. There were no short cuts taken, i know for a fact.
It is easy to get burned on this stuff...

i actually agree with getting n estimate without having tranny taken apart. Now that i think of it, that is true, how do they know the "hard parts" arent shredded to hell. and the more parts the tranny needs, the more expensive its going to be. so i do agree with this. These people ar basically saying, "yea, we'll put in a rebuild kit," and leave the rest alone. I know the rebuild kits dont come with EVERYTHING the tranny needs
