Hello. I have a 99 1500 4x4 extended cab. Had tranny fluid leaking out of the bellhousing. Figured it was the front seal so I took it to my friends shop. Apparently the torque converter is frozen to the front pump shaft and cannot be removed. I want to cut a hole in the torque converter with a roto-broach and gain access to the front pump bolts. My question is can I remove the converter and pump together after removing the bolts?

I dont know if you can or not. I would assume so but wouldnt take my word for it. Let me know what happens. I just had that problem start today. Tranny fluid leaking at bell housing and i pried the acces panel with my thumbnail and it poured out. Thinking its the pump seal and o ring.

 

Yes, it you remove the pump bolts you can remove the pump and torque converter as a unit. You may end up pulling input shaft along with the clutch packs also but thats not a big deal. Only thing I see that is a problem is not being able to attach a slide hammer to the pump but since you can get the bolts out maybe you can attach the slide hammer.

Probably just the torque converter seal in the pump. The o-ring does not move so unlikely that it is leaking.

 

Does anyone have any directions or tips? Dropping the tranny now cant get to two top bell housing bolts. Then once I get it off then what? Thanks

 

drop the rear mount, and crossmember, tilt the trans down to get access to the top two bolts. t/c should just pulled right off.... should.

 

I pulled the tranny in my 95 Dodge Ram 1500 2wd automatic and my torque converter is stuck. Cqn someone help me?! Advice on how to fix or if im able to replce the tranny with one from a 96 or 97. Thanks in advance.

 

How is it stuck?

You can only use a trans from a 94 or 95, newer ones won't work.

 

It will not pull out of the bell housing at all and the torque converter is off balance i think. There is roughed up metal on the hub part of the torque converter that matches up with the roughed up metal on the flywheel that would describe the vibrations I was having. What did they change from 95 to 96 and 97 in the tranny?

 

Use pry bars on either side, and pry it out. It just slips on there. Shouldn't be that hard to pull.

Was the trans/engine/torque converter changed at any time in the past?

 

Tried that too but was on the verge of breaking the bell housing. As far as anything being replaced I have no idea. Ive only had the truck for about 4 months and have put 6k miles on it. And I found another tranny out of a 95 ram but it has the 360 and I have the 318. Do you know if those are compatible?
