1987(?) and later S-10s had the 700R4 transmission -- a transmission Jeep guys love as it's more durable than their stock transmission. The 700R4 was also used in the Corvette.

S10s were good little trucks, and the 4.3L is a good engine. The rare Iron Duke 2.2L diesel makes the S10 a durable little beast.

I know all your pain. My first truck was a Sonoma with a 2.8 5spd. Not a bad first truck. But of course I wanted 4x4 and newer. So I got an s-10 blazer. Hated that dang thang. Yeah it was nice cause it had all the bells an whistles. But after 120k the truck ran like a dog and had to replace the wiring harness and about a thousnad dollars of repairs later traded it for the dodge and never looked back. Best choice ever........of all time!!

Up until the 88 model year.... the 700R4 (4L60) had a seven vane pump, which was notorious for failing...... in 88, they updated to a ten vane pump, and the trannies were much more reliable.

The five speeds they initially used were **** poor as well. My brother went thru FIVE transmissions on his 86 S-10..... and he didn't even drive it hard.

Yeah, I couldn't remember if it was 87 or 88 when the 700R4 was beefed up. They're supposed to be super easy to rebuild as well.

All it took to break those was to drive them at all. The common failure was oil weeping out along the tail shaft -- never a drop on the ground, but the driveline would be coated in gear oil. Folks who never topped up their trans oil level got bit by that all the time. The fix was to bore the housing and interference-fit a steel bushing. Then to sell the thing quick.

The automatic transmission in my dad's 86 Blazer went 256,000 miles. Ive got to do a fluid change in the current blue soon. Maybe go to synthetic!

Dont read stupid pointless threads then. I wonder how much of your life you spent doing stupid pointless things.

I want 2 minutes of my life back for typing this message. I could be mowing.

Terribly sorry. (not really) But, we don't do refunds on wasted time here. It is against company policy.
