Usually you dont take that off when resealing a transfer case. The seal will press into that piece. If the leak gets worse, id take it back apart and clean everything very well and reseal it.

I use 518 loctite gasket maker. great stuff.

I took it off to get the old seal out. I believe it is leaking under that ring where I put RTV ultra black. I tend to use the ultra black on everything but I'll give the loctite a shot, thanks.

Understood Jason!, Now let me ask monte a question and it's actually a ford tranny so i hope you guys dont mind but the guys on the explorer forums are kunckle heads.

Now my wifes truck is acting up, it's a 01 merc mountianeer, the transmission is new and has only been in it for about 18k. on cold days when she cranks it up and trys to back out of the garage it will either stall instantly or hesitate and kinda jerk, Now if i do it i just keep my foot on the gas an ride the brake backing out and it does fine. We took it to the dealership and ford says theres nothing wrong with the engine it's something to do with the tranny and wanted to charge us 350 bucks just to look at the trans, IE check valve body and such.

I said they could blow me and walked out, i do all of my own work and i dont like paying some one to do something i can do my self. But i dont know enough about ford trans to figure this one out on my own and i sure as hell aint taking it to the dealer.

Now it does make a rattling sound when in reverse but only when it's cold, once it gets to running temp it does fine no noise and no hesitation in forward or reverse. I have enough problems with my truck breaking **** and this mounty is kinda our backup truck when mine goes down and is also my wifes daily driver. If it breaks down it really puts us in a bind because i use my truck strickly for work and we have 2 kids and if i had to pick the kids up then pick her up from work theres not going to be enough room.

Sorry for the book but anyways if you know of any tricks i can try i'd be greatful

P.S transfluid is full clean and filter has been changed.

01 should be the 5R55E. Ive got mixed opinions about this trans. I cant decide if its a good trans or junk. Anyway. Whats rattling? The transmission? That trans should NOT be rattling. It could be a drain back issue with the converter. These units are bad about valvebodies, you might want to try installing a Gil Younger shift kit in it. Most trans shops ive been around wont spend the time to install and update kit.

K i will check out the kit. But to answer your question its coming from under the truck, i cant pin point where it is i even put it in reverse with the parking brake on and climbed under it while it was running and let her give it some gas.

But i still cant figure out where it's coming from.

Hey Montec, I have a question regarding my OD unit on my 46re. I'm measuring to see what thickness OD thrust spacer I need. After I made my 4 measurements and dividing by 4, my spacer thickness came out to 1.720. However, according to the FSM, the first spacer measurement starts at 1.750 Here's the chart:

End Play Measurement | Spacer Thickness
---------------------------------------
1.7500 - 1.7649 | .108 - .110
1.7560 - 1.7799 | .123 - .125
1.7800 - 1.7949 | .138 - .140
1.7950 - 1.8099 | .153 - .155
1.8100 - 1.8249 | .168 - .170
1.8250 - 1.8399 | .183 - .185
1.8400 - 1.8549 | .198 - .200
1.8550 - 1.8699 | .213 - .215
1.8700 - 1.8849 | .228 - .230
1.8850 - 1.8999 | .243 - .245

I've disassembled and reassembled the unit 3 times and nothings changed. What should I do now? Should I just use a .108 spacer? I'm out of ideas for now. Thanks again for having this thread.

Hey MonteC, after reviewing the FSM, I think I may have installed the OD sprag upside down. I think that may have thrown off my measurements. I'll take it apart again tomorrow after church and let you know if my problem still persists. Hopefully thats the problem.

Hey MonteC.

My transmission has been giving me quite the trouble lately. It seems every 1000 or so miles, my transmission wants to act up. The governor pressure sensor and solenoid seem to be getting gunked up. I'll drop the pan, replace the filter, clean the sensor and solenoid, replace the fluid and then all is fine for the next 1000 miles or so. This is becoming an expensive cycle, especially after having replaced the pair twice before. The transmission was rebuilt less than 15k ago under authority of the previous owner, but knowing the quality of the shop he took it to, I'm sure it wasn't the best of job. Any ideas what may be causing this?

I'm just trying to get through the first half of May when school lets out, so I can rebuild it myself. I have a mild 408 that's going to be built over the summer, so I'm wondering what type of parts I should be looking for in the rebuild. Any sort of list would be fantastic.

Anywho, thanks.
