MonteC's Transmission Corner (For Info Only)
Hi i am new to the site, and have a 95 ram 1500 2wd 5.2l with a bum trans. Reverse is shot, however is still works in all forward gears. I am not familiar with transmissions, therefore have my eye on a replacement 46rh.
The guy that has the trans, says it came out of a v6 ram 1996 model. It is still attached to the engine, as the truck was parted out. From everything i have read, this seems to be the wrong model of trans for that year and application. Can anyone sort this out for me?
Excuse my ignorance if i have anything wrong here. I just want to know if this will bolt up to my v8 without any issues.
Cheers.

Hey Monte, So I've got 2500 miles on the tranny that I rebuilt (you helped guide me threw it) with no problems...I think. So yesterday I was driving my truck on the freeway after a full tune up (it was misfiring bad), and when I was doing 70 mph I felt my hesitate then kept on going. As if it didn't catch a gear. All this happened in about 2 seconds. This happened before I rebuilt my tranny so I'm thinking it's an engine problem but I figured I'd ask you first in order to rule out the tranny. Thanks.
So since the tranny was shifting fine, you think it's something wrong in the actual case? What would cause the clutches to be engaged so often?
We were very careful with the clearance specs for the clutches. Any ideas on what could be wrong that would make it rub off so much friction material?
all at once, no 3rd and no reverse. there was no slipping or noise when this happened. i just took off from a stop sign and no 3rd gear, tried reverse when i got home and no reverse
o/d is working but it is o/d + 2nd gear, not 3rd.
it has a shift correction kit, big oil cooler, atf+4, 2500 miles on rebuild i guess i missed something it was my first rebuild, 95 318 dakota 4wd 46rh
i am hoping i dont need to pull the trans again. thanks for the help

thanks for the help. Another quick question, talked to the guy again and he said 46rh is the trans he has, not the 46re that from what i have read should be in the 1996. He says the 46rh is still bolted to his 1996 v6.
If this is infact a 46rh, then am i right in saying its not the original trans that came in the 1996 v6 ram? Further, is it still not compatible even if it is a 46rh.
Cheers
Thanks MonteC. I think I am going to pick up a gauge, a pillar gauge pod, and manifold t from them. I didnt see an actual kit but should be able to piece it all together. Just have to figure out which size manifold T that i need.
Thanks again,
Ray
Its a hard sound to describe lol....almost like a sloshing sound.... Im not really sure how to describe it. Anyway in the few days since my original post the trans hasn't acted up at all...it still has a sleight hesitation from 2nd to 3rd...letting off the gas for a second makes it shift... Also the first day it acted up it didnt want to shift out of first....i had to pull over shut the truck off and restart it to get it to shift out of 1st.....hasnt done this since, just that 1 time......anyway ill look into having the governor pressure solenoids checked. thanks again.
MonteC,
I've read this entire thread and I'm just looking for confirmation. I have a '01 Ram 1500, 5.2, 46RE, 4x4, 109,000 miles. The tranny shifts fine (no slipping that I can tell), it's just the timing and it doesn't seem to "put the power down". Early shifts, hard throttle to down shift, seems to be slow off the line, etc. From what I've read this is common with Dodge. I'm going to be plowing this winter so I would like to "take care" of this and help it out. Please correct me if I'm wrong or missed something. New TPS, GM pressure control soleniod conversion, governor sensor, transducer, Sure Cure, fluid/filter (obviously), and removal of check ball in cooling line. Is there anything else I should look at doing or is any of this not really needed. As far as it feeling slow off the line I'm not familiar with Dodge so I don't know if it's tranny or just the way the 5.2 runs. I've only had this truck for about 2 1/2 weeks. Any help would be great. Thank you.

Hi All,
Okay I'm new here and forgive me if this has been covered but after exhausting the search feature and skimming endless pages of this thread i didn't find anything that matched my circumstances.
I have a 98 Ram 1500 4x4 with 149k miles 5.2 and if i'm not mistaken its the 46re trans, as for what the problem is i'll describe it to the best of my ability,
1st and 2nd shift good going 2nd to 3rd it starts to almost jump hesitate and grumble a little before it grabs 3rd but only when i'm not giving it much gas , if I'm accelerating hard 1-2-3 seem fine but it will just hold 3rd until it red lines if i let off the gas and let the rpm's drop all the way down then step on the gas moderately hard it will go into what seems to be a "passing gear" definitely higher than 3rd but not overdrive, then if i hold that "passing gear" until i get to at least 55mph ish and repeat the rpm down and moderate acceleration process it will jump up to that passing gear then drop down into overdrive but every single time i let off the accelerator i have to do that process of letting the rpms come all the way down again if i just let off the gas and then ease back into it it will just climb to 4k+ rpm and feel like its not in gear at all.
Also I'm not sure if this is related but there is a noticeable "whining sound" when i'm coasting at lower speeds only when overdrive is turned on.
Now it has the check engine light on and the code reads bad o2 sensor ( Its going in the shop Monday for that) and i only bought this truck 4 days ago and i absolutely love it other than this problem.
Any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
