Default 46re problems

i recently found pieces of aproxx. half my OD snap ring (thanks 95ram360 for the info) in my trans. pan while doing an fluid flush. i had it looked at about a month ago for a serious whining sound that is occuring and was told it was my transfer case and not the tranny, so i decided to drive it untill it goes. Now that i know its both my tranny and my transfer case making the noise, and it comes in and out of o/d occasionally on highway. always making a whining sound regardless though. my tranny fluid looks fine and isnt burned at all. i am not very good with internals on the transmission so i want to avoid a rebuild. either put in one from the junk yard or is there i way just to replace the o/d unit without taking the tranny completely apart? also do certain year trannys have less problems than others?

Also, if you hear a grinding noise when you go from a drive gear to park it sounds like the out put shaft is turning, but no power is being transferred. The noise could be the parking paul being ratcheted rapidly until the parking lugs slow down enough to en gauge. I would also drain the T case and check the fluid. You might find you have a band t case.
Friend dropped the oil pan said transmission looks ok. Replaced fluid/filter and speed output sensor. Picked truck up again today and drove about 5 miles and it quit again. Called wrecker etc. AGGREVATED.
Was driving and truck just lost all power. After stopped, I tried all gears, 4H,4L, 2L and nothing. When I put back in park it would whine and sorta grind again. Once in park it would continue to roll downhill. Park not engaging. I have no idea what problem is.
Also what is band t case?

Thanks for your help

^Bad tcase. Typo.
A bad transfer case MIGHT cause something to go bad. Make sure the tcase has enough fluid in it first, but you might as well dump and flush it anyway. Make sure something hasnt blown up.... (may have)

Not the greatest pic but I just did a fluid change and found this in the pan. So tell me the bad news.

The governor pressure sensors changed in 2000. You have the wrong sensor for the trucks computer. Change it out and you will be fine.

BTW if the torque converter had the wrong spline count the truck wouldnt move.

Just take the o/d unit off the back of the transmission and replace the snap ring. All years have pretty much the same parts, not much is better from year to year.

Park IS engaging. If the truck is rolling when the transmission is in park that means the transfer case is in neutral. Sounds like your trans is fine but your transfer case is screwed up.

You are experiencing the same problem as DodgeMagnum318.

The o/d direct snap ring is broken. You can take the o/d unit off the case and replace that snap ring.

1. Dealership, or WITTRANS.com. They also offer a kit to 'upgrade' the sensor/solenoid to better GM style units.

2. If you have an original trans, you have a locking torque converter.
