Something is wrong with my truck. I get bad gas mileage

it is friggin weird. My 2001 is pristine under the valvecovers, and the plenum was perfect (I did put in the hughes plate).
But my truck says 9.8 MPG on the monitor when I am doing city driving. But, my drive to work is 3/4 of a mile away, and i have to turn 4 times to get there. THat is a lot of stopping and going. That kills gas mileage. My motorcycle is supposed to get 35 MPG, but I go through 1 gallon a week on my mile commute.
If you are not in OD a lot, you are gonna burn gas. Hills help though!!! I can vouch for that! you just have to gain speed on the straightaway and then ease off the gas a bit so the speed stays at one point, then don't push the gas as you go up the hill. You will go from 75MPH to about 55-60, but your truck will not try to work harder and burn more fuel.

Anyway you will notice in my reply I don't say much about the highway, in reality our trucks do the best on low speed rural roads where you never have to stop or change speeds (except on hills), in other words at what ever speed your transmission goes into overdrive is where you will get the best "highway" mileage, usually between 35 & 45mph. (so long as you don't have to ever stop anyway)
So unlike in town where you DON'T drive like grandma on the highway you must drive like grandma because our trucks are as aerodynamic as a brick without wheels.
Occasionally if the wind is with you or if you can side draft a semi you can drive much faster and still get good mileage but normally you must be driving 55mph or less, unless you add a $60 aerodynamic angled cover over your bed then you could get 16 going 70mph and it really isn't that much work either.
Something else you likely know but don't probably like is that our trucks like slightly higher octane than the generic cheap crap, I rarely use it but when its on sale I have gained some FE with 89 octane.
And one tip, if you drive on the highway a fair amount, allow the truck to slow up going up hills (hold the pedal steady) On the other side allow the truck to slowly accelerate by slowly moving in the pedal as it speeds up. That method works at ever speed, never try to force the truck to go faster than it seems to "Want" to go.
And obviously if you can plan an extra 10-15minutes of time just drive slower and hold the pedal rock solid steady that is the best way to get 3-5mpg better.
Cheers
