Default what is happening

So I have a 1997 1500 sport, 5.9l auto 4wd was working now it is not. The 4wd shifter feels like it is working, but it is not locking in 4wd, no light no traction. Is the shifter electronic, even though there is a lever, or what is going on here. Any help would be great.

Thanks Mcmopar

Transfer case is more than likely doing its job. However.... the central axle disconnect is probably not. Take a look at the passenger side front axle. There is a housing there with two vacuum lines, a vent line, and an electrical connector. Start the truck, crawl under there, pull the vacuum connector off the cad housing. got vacuum at one of the ports? That's as it should be. Put the t-case in 4wd, vacuum should switch to the OTHER port on that connector. Does it? If not, you have a vacuum problem. (very common) if it does, you are going to need to pull the housing, and have a look inside, and see what's up.

i had the same problem with my '96 ram, turned out that the vacumn lines were rotten so CAD would not work.installed a posi-lock kit and solved that problem.

i used my 4wd yesterday just to make sure i didn't spin any in a friend's yard. with my new bushings in the cad housing, i pulled the posilok cable and it connected the axles with that oh-so-satisfying little click sound.

mcmopar, you might be getting axle engage but no light. check the stupid light switch on the end of the cad and its stupid little wires hanging down. if you're not getting any axle engagement, then its most likely a stupid little vac line hanging down and damaged. the last problem is the cad itself, often a rusty shaft inside that needs cleaning. after you fix it a couple of times and get tired of it, look into a posliok. it allows 2wd low.

Well finaly got around to fixing the 4x4, and found that the vacuum lines were burn't off. I was wondering where the green line hooks up to. I found the grey line an it's conection. I know that it is in the back of the motor, but you cannot see back there well so a digram would help.

Thanks

should be a diagram on a label on your radiator support, or somewhere else under the hood. Could also have a look at the 01 service manual that you can download from here. (its in the FAQ section.)

burnt where? is only the green line burnt? elaborate a little

the green line hooks into the boot on the t-case vac switch as does the white (supply from manifold to switch), red (4wd supply from switch to cad), and black (2wd supply from switch to cad).
