Default Broken plenum stud help (PICS ADDED)

Broke a stud off in the block when removing the plenum.

Attempted to vice grips, no luck.

Was drilling thru middle of the stud and bit broke off.

What drill bit can drill thru other bits.

Suggestions welcomed. I have used the torch with no avail.

Try a combination of chemicals, and heat. Is there anything left of the bolt sticking out that you can get a grip on? Got an electric welder?

No welder. Nothing to really grab.

Just bought a stud extractor. That didnt work cause I need to get that busted drill bit out.

If it is sticking above the surface at all, use a die grinder and cut a groove in it to accept a slotted screwdriver(use an old one that you don't care about to round the tip and match the slot as best you can). Then soak it over night with a quality penetrating oil. Heat the surrounding area in the AM and give it a go with the screwdriver. Use the vise grip on the shaft of the screwdriver and gently twist in both directions at first.

Only way to get the drill bit it is to either buy a really expensive drill bit, that will cut the hardened steel of the broken bit, or, get a punch, and try and shatter it, and pick it out in pieces. (very tedious work.) Aside from that, zman's suggestion is your best bet.

Just spent $60 on a dremel kit. That was worthless.

Can I get away just leaving it? It is the drivers side stud closest to the front of the truck, that connects the plenum to the block.

bolt it down and find out. I had both front studs break when i changed plenum gasket but was fortunate enough to not break a bit in there! drill in and bolt extractor out.

A solid carbide spade bit should drill through the old bit but may not work well because it will want to wander into the aluminum. I would get a 1/8th solid carbide burr and grind it out with the dremel tool. If I ground too much and damaged the surrounding threads I would buy a heli coil kit to finish the repair.

I dont even care about the threads at this point. I have access to the backside to put a nut if needed.

I am at a loss here.

Got any pics of the snapped bolt? How far down in the bolt hole is it?
