usually when i'm seating the trust bearing on an engine build i tighten all the caps to spec and then take a piece of 2x4 and hit the end of the crank 2-3 times on each end of the crank with a hammer. wish i could tell you how hard to hit the ends but i just do it off feel. u are only tring to get the trust bearing edges to fit snuggley against the block.

The dull finish is normal. It is a really soft metal, so, not really shiny. So long as it is a uniform color, and your tolerances are right, you are golden.

From the base of the roller, to the top of the lifter body, then, subtract the measurement from the top of the lifter body, to the seat.

If the lines in the rod bearing aren't deep, (you don't see copper thru it....) and you can't feel it, should be golden.

Need a depth gauge. Most dial calipers well have one. All it is is a rod that sticks out the end.

i plan to assemble it tomorow. is there anything i need to do to keep dust in the air to a minumum, or is it not a big deal for the internals to be unprotected for a few hours during assembly?

There is not a damn thing you can do about dust..... unless you want to invest in a "clean room"..... (several hundred thousand dollars....) Don't even worry about it. So long as you don't get DIRT in there, it will be fine.
