so if i adjust the cable then which way should i go? forward or backward? it will not shift out of 2nd untill i run it up to 4500rpm's and LET OFF the gas. every once in a while it will not shift out then, i have to stop and put it park and then back to drive and when it shifts into 2nd i again run it up to 4500 rpm's and let off and it shifts into 3rd and after that it shifts fine until i stop and it goes into 2nd again. then i run it up to 4500rpms and let off the gas and it shifts to 3rd.
yall are getting the idea.

 

Just follow the adjustment procedure to make sure it is adjusted properly, and that everything moves freely, and as it should. If you still have the problem, THEN spend money on the sensor/solenoid.

 

Did that link not work for you? I would start by setting it to the stock setting first. Check to make sure that the spring is working down on the tranny. Check the cable for binding, Heck see if it's even hooked up to the TB.

For EARLIER, SOFTER shifts, slide the cable housing further INTO (forward) the locking
mechanism. Attempting to make the shifts too early will result in excessive transmission slippage during shifts, especially at medium and heavy throttle.
WARNING: Going too far in either direction will cause trouble!!

 

if it doesnt appear to need adjustment then dont adjust it...

do you have a haynes manual or shall i proceed with the adjustment process?

 

really starting to sound like the sensor and solenoid, but adjust the TV and see how that works

 

ok guys
since the pan is going to be off i will be changing filter and fluid. the haynes manuel says to adjust the bands. the rear band is in the pan. all of my torque wrenchs read FT LBS not IN LBS. what is the converson from inch to foot?

1 foot pound equals 12 inch pounds.

Your torque wrench may not go low enough, or, it may simply be inaccurate at the low of a setting.....

 

i adjusted the TV cable. i went as far as a 1/4 inch in each direction. made no difference with the hanging up part of my problem. so i went back to the original spot and i will now get the sensor and solenoid. report back later.

 

im interested to hear how you got 72 in/lbs out of a ft/lbs torque wrench?

at this point, regarding the tv cable, your not trying to make shifts changes but return it back to stock, since its messed up. so verify that the shift lever is all the way to the front of the truck. VERY carefully pull the TV cable off of the stud at the the throttle lever and verify that the hole on the plastic boot is perfectly centered over the stud, when the cable is taught, but not moving the shift lever.
