I have a question,

Do you have a auxillerly transmission cooler installed in your truck ? Or does your transmission cooling lines only go to the main radiator and thats it ?

Im asking because the torque converter actually helps keep the transmission cooler when your driving, if your TC isnt working properly if you want to keep driving the truck without it i would get a cheap cooler and put it on your truck just to be sure that it stays at temp. Eventually itll need to be replaced if it truely is bad because it can cause engine stalling in gear and stuff.

What i hear most people do to the check valve is remove it and take a drill and drill through the valve then reinstall it so you dont need adapters or something.

No extra cooler just the radiator.

Can a torque converter get stuck locked? What are the symptoms? I'm asking because yesterday driving down the inveterate I was cruising at 70 and the rpm were at 2200ish

After I got off the interstate I checked to see if it was locking and its still not locking so I'm wondering if it is stuck locked? Maybe thats why I can't see it lock?

How hard is it to install a transmission temp gauge? Is there a diy guide on this site? If I install one what are optimum trans temps?

2200 at 70 is about right.

If it remained locked, you would stall the engine every time you stopped. It would be just like pulling up to a stop with a manual trans, and not using the clutch.

Ok changed the fluid and it was pretty dirty. About 30 miles after changing it the check engine light came on and I did the ignition check and its p1740 (tcc or o/d solenoid)

Looks like I will be going to the mechanic this week and dropping a couple hundred bucks

From talking to the transmission shops around here they say I need a rebuild. What do you guys think?

if the fluid didn't have a bunch of metal shavings in it, and your mileage isn't outrageous, you might be able to get away with just changing the O/D, and TCC solenoid set.... a lot cheaper than a rebuild.

I think I'm going to replace the solenoid and see if that fixes it. If it doesn't then I will look into replacing the torque converter and rebuilding the tranny.

Is it necessary to rebuild the tranny if you replace the torque converter? I think I can pull the tranny and replace the torque converter myself if replacing it will save my tranny.

If your torque converter is indeed the problem, chances are it has already circulated crap throughout the transmission, and just replacing it would only be a temp fix, before the trans itself went out. At which point, you would have to replace it again.....

If the solenoids don't fix it, rebuild the whole thing, and put in a new (BETTER) torque converter.

Should I replace the governor pressure solenoid while I'm in there or just the tcc solenoid?

If it shifts rationally, and you haven't gotten any codes for it, up to you.... if it has given trouble in the past, replace 'em.
