Ok. So I'm trying to put in a couple hours tonight after work, and I am to the point of taking end play measurements. Im kinda curious if the shim is reusable if it's the right specs...I'm currently getting 1.7318 for a measurement and that falls below what the chart lists...I'm sure I could figure it out mathematically, but the spacer is a .2130...which means my measurement should have been between 1.8550 - 1.8699. Seems like a lot changed, could it be because the new frictions? I just know these spacers are pretty crucial for reverse and 3-4 shift so, any input would help...thanks guys.

If the old shims aren't damaged, go ahead and re-use them. New frictions will be thicker than the ones there were in there. (at least, one would hope... )

Kinda what I figured, but I just wonder if I'm close enough to the 1.7500 - 1.7649 measurement to be able to use the .108 - .110 spacer...Or if it means I don't need a spacer? At any rate, the spacer that was in there is way too thick. Would probably equal a no reverse or binding from 3-4 shift...

I am kinda brain dead at the moment, and math is a bit beyond me..... but... shim it so that you are within the correct spec. This is one of those situations were there isn't any such thing as "close enough", it needs to be Right™.

No I totally agree...I just didnt know...because I'm only .0182" off from the first shim size, so I should be able to deduct that from the smallest spacer they list (the .108-.110) and get a spacer that matches that measurement, .0898-.108. In which case the .108 should work. I was just hoping for a little reassurance that I'm on the right track because math isn't really my strong suit either =P. Any mathmaticians care to double check me...please?

Current measurement is 1.7318, and it needs to be 1.750-1.749? That is damn close, and i would think you only need like .0082 spacer to put you right on 1.750.. they got anything in that neighborhood??

I'm thinkin' get the .108 shim and see if the local machinist can shave it a lil'...best I can come up with. The smallest shim I can find is .108.

That may be your best bet...... not like you could just slap it on some sand paper, and expect anything approaching accuracy..... Might wanna check with any of your local trans shops as well, and see if they have anything laying around.

This thread isn't intentionally almost 10 pages long...=P Anyways, I went to a local tranny shop by my work, and he seems to think I have something misaligned or assembled incorrectly. He said 9 out of 10 518's get the .183 shim that he builds. So he thinks somethings not right...I KNOW my measurements are accurate after checking them 5 times with a couple different witnesses. This is killing me...I just wanna move on.
I'm really not wanting to tear that O/D section back down, but what else is there to do? And by the way, the clutch packs dont affect the height of that hub that your taking your measurements from...now the new 800lb spring seat does, assuming that that much material was worn off the old spring seat.
If he swears that every rebuild he does gets the .183 shim, I'm way off. But why would they make that many multiple shim sizes if they were rarely applicable? I feel like I'm goin crazy over this and just need an answer with some conviction. Something besides "take it to someone qualified"...lol
