...... If you have a laptop, you can get a cable for under 50 bucks, and software for free..... to take the place of the scan tool. You won't be able to change anything, (without spending some bucks....) but, you WILL be able to see ALL SORTS of data. Makes troubleshooting performance problems MUCH easier.
HeyYou,
I searched e-bay and found a number of cables and such - mostly from sellers in China. Any suggestion of best one? What I saw were vehicle specific. Is there one that can be used on multiple vehicles? I think this would be really handy.
Where can one find the software to download and how would you know what software works for which cable?
Thanks.

There are some freeware apps out there in the world, I have been poking about trying to find one that will do what I want, that doesn't cost an arm and a leg...... I have seen some good software for a hundred bucks or so, but, given the cost of scanners....... that really isn't too bad. PCM Scan looks like it will do everything you would want. Here is a bit more informative page, which also has links to get the correct cable. (probably a better source in any event....) According to popular theory, with the correct cable, you should be able to chat with ANY OBDII compliant vehicle.....

That is what I was thinking. I may have to test this theory after I finish this project. i only have 6 different vehicles and would like somthing that would work with the ones that are OBD compliant (a couple are too old).
Thanks.

Ok this is the problem the truck will not rev past 3500 rpm after rebuilding engine with new cam and pistons does it in gear and in park or neutral Aldo seems to run very rich. The TPS, coil, plugs, iac valve distributor cap and rotor were all replaced. The fuel sync has also been set it was at -8 to start with it's now at +2 and runs a but better but still will not rev up. I have tried setting the comp back to stock via act tuner and it has not helped
