Default sludgy coolant leaking somewhere on front of engine.

I noticed this a few days ago and have been curious as to what the problem is. my oil comes out clean if that makes any difference. its right behind my alternator. I had to take my alternator off to get some of the pictures. Check out the pics below.

if you can tell what the problem is could you tell me if its something i could fix myself or if i need to take it in to have it fixed. and what it would cost.

Heres a link to the album there are 6 images.

on the last image its unrelated to this problem i was just wondering if that corrosion was normal. And if not what do i do to fix it.

Looks like the thermostat housing or the by pass hose is leaking.

My vote's on the bypass hose. That said, were it mine to do, I'd replace the water pump and the bypass hose just because I'd be digging that deep.

So the bypass hose is that black hose in one of the pictures correct? Also why would it be so sludgy and not liquid?

Mixing with oil and dirt if your valve covers have any leaks or the intake manifold has oil residue on it, or any number of reasons. As long as the coolant in your system doesn't look like that.

Any leak should be addressed. Valve covers might be as easy as tightening the bolts.....

The hose is only about 3 inches long, with a slight bend to it. Goes from the water pump, to the intake manifold. It hides under the A/C compressor, and bracket, so, it isn't easy to see......
