CEL Cyl 8 misfire
Got intake pulled out and only broke off one bolt. Cannot understand how I got lucky by one on the front breaking off. My luck ususally would have had one at the back break off! While letting broken bolt soak in penetrant, I pulled plenum pan off to see how bad the gasket was blown:

You can see some of the gasket pushed out - and where a piece is missing - probably in the oil pan...

Don't know if they get any uglier than this one or not....

No pics? Doesn't count! When I laid mine on garage floor, oil ran out. Looked like a BP drilling site....without the dead fish. I am surprised that the truck was running as good as it was all things considered. Think I am going to change O2 sensor just to make sure. PCM will think I installed a new engine!
The only problem with a "ugliest plenum thread" is that because of cost of parts/cost to install/just don't know what the crap a plenum is there probably would be just a few post's every once and a while.
I've got a 99 Ram 2500 with a 5.9 V8 and its more or less got the same symptoms (#8 is missing pretty bad, shakes like an earth quake at 45 mph). Do you remember the size of the spark plug socket? The new plugs take a 5/8's but the ones in it now take something smaller and I'd rather not buy every deep well spark plug socket smaller than 5/8"
Thanks
Architect,
Welcome to DF. I don't know of any smaller size for spark plugs. Just 13/16" and 5/8". You might want to take a pick or compressed air nozzle and blow or scrape around base of plug. (wear google when using compressed air). Something is keeping socket from going down far enough. Should be 5/8 if it has the correct plugs in it.

I thought I would follow up and clarify this question posed by zman. I know how confusing it can be to read a thread and see information that appears to be in conflict. (And I never have a problem with someone pointing out something and questioning it. It is easy to overlook something and great when someone causes me to double check. Sometimes save a "DOOOO" moment! Thanks zman - your questions and pointing out things is very helpful)

The question was related to the timing mark on the crank gear. There is a mark on the tooth that is in the 12 o'clock position that is not clearly visible. Note the alignment of the crank key.
The following photo is the original crank gear. The timing mark is on the boss of the sprocket and not on the tooth. Note the position of the crank keyway.

I think an important thing to keep in mind while doing this task - when disassembling, do NOT change the position of the cam or the crank. I hope to be able to get this finished up this weekend and crank it up. Been oout of town last couple of days, and decided the other day to stop and wait for new o rings (no one had them in stock). I dislike using old seals and o rings. My luck has always been to have leaks afterwards...
