just seems to me there would be a bunch of yanking and bouncing under that cover as opposed to a nice steady rotation... if that chain was aging anyways, it could have had enough slop in it to allow jumping several teeth.. if so, there is your huckleberry..

as long as you didn't skip HUGELY, you should still rotate with ease.. these motors are 'sposed to be non interference, but there was a thread not long ago which indicated otherwise..

you'll have to pull the accessory bracket off, and the WP to get to the timing cover.. once you pull it, you should see the marks, and have an idea if you're off..

i'm pretty sure there is a DIY for timing chain in the FAQ, but chiltons and haynes covers it as well- in addition to finding TDC/1 on cylinder one..

find those directions and follow them.. to the letter.. also, be mindful not to gouge your oil pan gasket- and have an extra on hand if you do..

Turn the engine so the marks on the dampner line up at zero. (scale on block, TDC for number 1 on dampner.) Pull the dist cap, and look and see where the rotor is pointing. Should be pretty close to the number one terminal labeled on the cap.

when i did my timing chain gasket. the 1 1/4 bolt to the harmonic balancer was a pita but than we hit it with a impact wrench and it came right off. the actually pulling off the the H/B was the easiest part of the whole entire job. jus rent the tool from autozone. its about 20 bucks but you get it back when you return it.
hope the best for you man... ive read this entire thread and i dont think ive seen anywhere where youve tried to manually tryed to turn the engine for an obstruction. maybe i missed it any who, id check the lining that everyone is suggesting before pulling all that stuff off infront of the timing chain.

Here are some pictures. In addition, on the cap #1 is marked.

Yellow box denotes the TDC 1 mark.

Timing Cover -- Use the h/b cut mark to point. You'll see graduation marks.
