Default Harland Sharp 1.7 RR's

So, was thinking about doing the DIY below:

https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...r-rockers.html

For adding 1.7 RR's to my 5.2L v8 Magnum. Question I have is on the ebay listing for these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DODGE-MAGNUM...item43abb98102

It says that it "Requires the installation of guide plates and 3/8 rocker studs"

is that true for our engines? In the DIY i dont see anything about installing guide plates and rocker studs. More like unbolt rebolt turn engine torque again, and be careful not to drop stuff inside. Second, is there a better place to order these parts or do most people ebay it??

Thanks

Laramie! :P

I've talked to Shannon and he conceded that the guide plates are not required. But I have not done this yet. There was some other sdiscussion - I think Aim4squirrels or drewactual installed these without guideplates.....maybe one of them will post up.

Depends on brand and style.

The 70037 Harland Sharp non adjustable 1.7 roller rockers that most folks here buy for a performance bump do not need guide plates or special stud mounts. I believe the adjustable ones do, but I never owned a pair to say with 100% certainty.

Those look like the adjustable fellers. Chevy style stud mounts.

Anyone know if iwhitne is still around?? Maybe we can ask him how his RR's are doing and if he had to install guide plates and rocker studs.

Just looked at that ebay link, don't think those are right for our engine, don't buy them.

They look to be a Chevy set that you could put on the Edelbrock aluminum heads, but not the magnum heads.

The adjustable ones for stock heads are near $500, nobody world be selling them that cheaply.

the ones in the link are the huckleberry..

simply pull the stamped rockers, plates and all.. bolt those in.. torque to spec.. put everything back together and roll on..

there was a thread some time back with a dude arguing about using guides with those particular rocker rollers, and he was flat wrong.. no matter how loudly he protested, he was wrong.. I question whether he even installed them, or if he knew a dude who knew a dude who was related to a dudes friend who installed them.. because the OE guides won't allow the pedestals to meet the stud/boss on the heads at all- and the key word there is 'pedestal'.. when you see them, and you see the stud/boss on the heads, you'll understand..

the instructions request you rotate the engine to achieve seated torque.. I think this is simply them attempting to be overly thorough.. all you gotta do is pull the existing stamped rockers and plates off, and bolt those on to torque specs (21ftlbs).. done.. the pedestals lie flat on the boss.. end of story.. it's an hours (tops) worth of work, and likely worth the additional 12~20 horses, and likely 30#'s tq..

it's my opinion that the majority of the performance bump comes from losing parasitic loss of resistance those mechanical pivot stamped rockers cause.. and to add to that, any loss of mileage from additional valve lift is likely negated by making it easier for the engine to actuate the valve train.. it's a good, easy, and fairly cheap mod..

good luck dude!
