Default Installing a 2001 5.9l in a 1994 Ram 4x4

If I install a 2001 5.9L in a 1994 Dodge Ram will I also need the onboard computer from the 2001?

Thanks

Mike

Yes, you will. It won't be an easy swap... a lot of electrical differences between 1994 and 2001.

Also, for future reference:

hold on...

if your 94 was a 5.9, you can do this. if your 94 was a 5.2, it will be more complicated.

assuming they are both 5.9's, you just need to convert the 01 engine to a 94 by putting the 94 intake and sensors on it. no egr on 01, not sure about the 94.

don't try to put the 01 computer in a 94.

+1

If you put the 94 intake with egr on the engine becomes a 94 for all intents and purposes

I do have a 5.2. Would it be easier if the 5.9 was from a 99 Ram? How much more complicated?

it will work. I am running the same setup in my 94. Its a 2001 motor with a 94 intake manifold and exhaust manifold, running all the factory 94 sensors and ecu. I am running a 5.2L with the 5.9L ECU and it works, just runs rich. I would assume it would work the other way as well but it would run lean which could be bad.

also you need to use the 360 flexplate and torque converter due to the 5.9L being externally balanced and the 318 being internally balanced.

Intake and exhaust are the same between the 5.2 and 5.9.

damn, can't yall learn to put in all the important facts in one post...

so you have a 94 truck with a 5.2.

you need to replace it with a 5.2, from any year (94-01), and put your 94 intake manifold and sensors on the replacement engine, IF (and only if) it is not already a 94-95.

i think? that if you install a 5.9, its going to run lean, and you will need a 94 computer from a 5.9. if you go this route, you might need to match the rest of the truck's equipment. 3.9/5.2/5.9/v10, auto/manual, gas/diesel, etc. this is beyond what little i know.
