Nope. It can cause erratic shifting behavior when it's missing, but it won't prevent starting.

do the cap and rotor- cheap and it needs it. i bet its either the crank pos sender, coil, or the cap itself.
An easy way to see if its gas related is to pour a quarter cup of gas in the throttle body and crank it, if it starts and dies the problem is fuel delivery.

thanks, i did try a little gas not 1/4 cup, but i did try (starting fluid) and didn`t make any dif at all never tried to crank. i hope my unenployment starts this comming week and i can aford to start with a new cap and rotor. so we`ll see. but either way i`m getting a code reader.

well after getting under the truck today and looking for where the spring goes i noticed a whole cable off of the rod it goes on,not sure what it is but it is a cable not linkage. one end of the spring went there and other went to another peice. have no idea what that cable is for but it always shifted fine. i looked in my service manula and couldnt find anything on that cable. but any who its back in place. i just wish it was my no start problem
