After consulting the all mighty FSM it looks like it doesn't look like too bad of a chore to adjust the band. The adjusting screw is on the left side of the transmission case about the manual valve and throttle valve levers. Page 2174.
If a band adjustment doesn't fix (more like buy some time) I'll probably have to take you up on the offer. One hell of drive though, just over 1200 miles.

Band is not difficult. But use the torque wrench. May pull and clean sensor and gov solenoid while you are there.

For ****s and giggles I looked at the PATC Rebuild Kits, their web layout is very confusing. Need to simplify it.
OP? And you'll have to school me on the good single malt. Oh, have some Cuban's in the humi

I had a simular problem. It started with the torque converter locking and unlocking while in cruse. Sort of like when you let up on the gas (TC unlocks) then step back down on the gas and TC locks again. Then it got worse it would shift sloppy (rev a little) and some times shift and act like it was going to down shift then shift up again.. I saw a post on this forum about a simular problem and they fixed it with a TPS. I checked mine with an ohm meter and it had dead spots (high ohms) in a couple of places. I did not have a CEL. Replaced the TPS and all seems good now. Time will tell.
