Default 98 ram 1500 sensor on transmission tail leaking

I changed my oil on my 98 dodge ram 1500 and while I was under the truck I noticed that there's a small sensor (vss sensor?) that's located on the tail end of the transmission that was damp with trans fluid, is this the vss sensor? Is it common for them to leak? Lastly am I going to take a transmission fluid bath when I yank it out of there to replace it?

Think that would be the trans output speed sensor. I don't *think* you get a lot of fluid out of the hole when you pull it, but, be prepared for that anyway.

I believe its just an o-ring seal there too...

+1 HeyYou

Nothing will come out and yep just an o-ring, I looked for a part number for the o-ring but no luck in the Dodge parts book anyway.

Very good. Local transmission shop told me I'd loose all of the fluid but they also told me I had a 4l60e transmission in my dodge even after looking at it so I think someone's had a few to many to be taken seriously.

Don't ever let those monkeys near your truck with tools! Heck, if they just want to ride in it you should put them in the bed like flea bitten dogs.

That's exactly why I perfer to do all of my own work, transmission stuff is alien to me but even I know I've got the 42re transmission in it, 4l60e is General Motors I think...

I'll know for sure when I crawl under it to change sensor, I believe the 42re had a flat pan and the 46re had a slightly curved pan, I'm anxious to get this sensor done so I can start on my 2nd gen lil red express clone project.
