Default Overdrive question

So I have 1998 Dodge Ram 5.9 sport, if I'm on the highway and use overdrive, so let's say I click it off then when I click it back on theres a long pause and it will not smoothly get back into overdrive. If I'm towing I can't stay overdrive off its rev to high at about 65 mph. When I bought the truck it needed a lot of work and one of the things I replaced was all the solenoids and what not in the bottom of the tranny. Truck shifts mint, but if the overdrive is switch back on when the highway it seems to be hurting the tranny, any ideas?

Don't tow in Overdrive. That's a real good way to destroy the trans. If the engine RPM is too high, slow down.

The O/D shift is just a solenoid engaging. PCM decides when it should happen, (and TCC engage as well.)

How many miles on the trans?

Best way I can describe what happens is when I'm out of o/d and what to go back in and click it, It's like there's no fluid in that valley/solenoid for a moment then its back to normal

Problem with towing in O/D is: The trans generates a LOT of heat that way. Heat is what kills your trans fluid, with hard parts following close behind. A temp gauge wouldn't be a bad idea....

The pop-up camper may not be too bad, but, hauling another car on a trailer in O/D is pretty much guaranteed to toast your trans. The 46R? trannies weren't really the best when they were brand new......

Some delay going into O/D should be expected, if you think the delay is excessive..... first thing is to make sure you have enough fluid. Always check the fluid in neutral, checking in park will give you an artificially high reading.

Fluids good I have a deeper pan and a tran temp gauge too, tranny never gets hot unless I'm on the beach. When I drive home today I'll see if i can make it do it

Just if it helps before I did all the solenoids in the tranny I was having a problem with the tranny down shifting only in 3rd and only 40-50 and tranny fluid foaming changed the solenoids and never had a problem with either again

Yep, 46RE.

You have the tow, or heavy duty package on that? (the clue is the aux trans cooler between the a/c condenser, and the radiator. )
