Need to check the plenum. If you are high mileage, valve seals might be an issue as well.

With that many miles on it, just replace the heads. They were problematic when they were new. With that many miles, you can be assured they are cracked.

What would be the symptoms of a cracked head? and are there any recommended upgrades to do to new heads?

Low power, compression leakage, a miss that you simply can NOT find.... It varies.

The new castings come complete. Heads, valves, spring, locks, retainers, seals. All put together too. There are things you *could* do...... better springs, one-piece valves, (if they aren't already, not sure on the new ones.) better seals, 1.7 ratio rockers..... gasket match? porting? polishing? Basically its up to you, and how much ya wanna spend. Most folks just bolt 'em on, right outta the box.

I'm always looking to get extra power. Would it be a good time to do a cam as well. Not too familiar with pushrods engines.

If you are going to rebuild it, you can do whatever you want. Question becomes, how much do ya wanna spend?

Well considering that heads alone cost upwards of 1000 bucks...
