00 ram 1500 replacing rear main seal question
hi i got a couple questions as i doing my transmission i figured id do the rear seal of the engine.. but also wanted to know when do you do the front seal preventive maintainance?
2nd i got the 2 seal haves out and i got the tiniest nick on the one side when i used a punch to loosen the seal..
3rd.. when i reinstall the cap with the seal in it.. how tight do i tighten the 4 bolts. to hold that on and then to hold the oil pump on... and do i use blue loctite on threads or just oil?
and how tight do i tigthen the pan bolts.

the tiny nick is in the half cup that the seal slides in at the edge.. i dont think i have a nick in crank least i dont think i nicked that side
i looked at your FSM
so the bigger bolt is 6 tick marks so i guess thats grade 8 and the smaller bolt has 3 ticks so guess thats grade 5
so whats the body size is that the lenght of the bolt if its the threading i have no idea how to read threadings and no tap and die...
and pan bolts there is no section in the front of the FSM that says what pan bolts need to be tightened to they just stamped with letters not tick marks or a number so i have no idea how to tigten those
and the metal plate that bolts to the back of crank shaft that you tighten the torqu converter to.. how tight are those they are a flat head no marks i guess thats 4T but not sure what torque is for that fat head short bolt and bolt sizes on the FSM is in mm thats no good to me i know inchs and 16ths

Nothing moves in the cups the seal goes into, so those don't matter. If you can clean it up a bit, fine, if you can't, no harm done. So long as the crank sealing surface is clean and smooth, you are all good there.
Standard bolt size reads: bolt diameter, number of threads per inch. So, a 3/8ths 16 X whatever, is a 3/8ths bolt, 16 threads per inch, and whatever length. That doesn't include the head of the bolt, nor does it tell you what size wrench it takes.
Metric is pretty much the same thing.
In the "engine" section, it will talk about Remove and install of the various parts, there should be info on tightening patterns, and torque specs there.... Though, not always.....
You could prolly google the info, and come up with something.

hi i just got the 2 part seal.. now it has different instructions then the book so i wanna verify things as it talks about the big lip book talks about paint well no paint..
also has a shoe horn not sure how to use it
and where do i exactly put which sealants flange antibotic sealant and the black rtv
here the pics as i dont wanna do it wrong and do i off set it like this i have in the cap and do i put a dab of flange sealent on the end of the 2 part seal as i read somewhere they recommend that just a dab to make sure it seals
and big lip is on the right in the pic right by my thumb that goes on the inside of the engine and other side faces out

The 'opening' in the seal faces the inside of the motor, that way, internal pressure will help it seal.
A bit of anaerobic sealer goes on the ends of the seal, a dab of RTV goes in the corners where the oil pan seal goes around the main bearing cap.

so i have it the right way in the pic the seal i have it goes right side(thumb side) goes towards inside of engine
and the book is totally different the hayes book on procedures like it talks about half way and then i read clocking it which i guessing like it says on those bag instructions u turn it up so they are off set..
and i guess i torqu the bolts after to 85 pounds i was googling and i think oil pump the same..
and that i lightly oil it... and then i read be easy or ill shave it and another said drop the crank shaft a bit i hoping the oil i can push over top of the crank
