Your P1740 maybe because of a bulletin to replace the boost plate on top of the valve body. If you can't get the plate. You can drill the hole out bigger. TSB 21-011-00 part number 4617015, that is a mopar number. I believe you can drill it out to 3/16. Remember band adjustment 1/4 to 1/2 inch free play. I learn the hard way on my very first on back in 1989.

I really hate to say anything but it has been over a month and it shifts like it should and has set no codes except for p0433, which I am still chasing. I guess I will just wait and see.
Thanks
Jim

Jim,

did you have to drop the tranny to perform all these steps? I have the same issue and would like to be able to fix them myself. I recently replaced the entire front end "suspension" on my 96'.

Nothing I did involved removing the transmission, only removed the pan.

So, some news.
Today it was driving and shifting fine, all of a sudden it felt like it went into neutral and I lost every gear. I thought the transfer case popped out of gear and I tried it in 4wd high and 4low. Nothing. The only gear I have now is park. Seems since I have park the transfer case and rest of the drivetrain is ok. Am I right in thinking maybe a drum or input shaft broke? I have not yet done any other diagnosis as I just got it towed home. The fluid looks ok, but there is just the smallest whine when in D or R when I push the gas a little, but not in P or N.
Thanks
Jim

Unplug the 8 pin connector on the side of the trans, start it up, see if it goes into gear. If it does, just an electronics problem. If it doesn't, gonna need to drop the pan, and see what you find.

Thanks, I unhooked the plug and it acted the same. No gears except park.
Thanks

Time to drop the pan, and see what you find.

I am having doubts that I can pull it and do the rebuild myself, probably going to a transmission shop. I used to pull, clean and disassemble 904s and 727s in my younger years. Never put one back together by myself though. I will be taking bets on what happened. I am thinking input shaft of torque converter. It will be interesting to find out. Thanks for the help all.

Several members here have rebuilt their own, and they had never been inside a trans before. There are some really comprehensive videos on youtube, if you don't wanna pay the labor for a rebuild.
