So the rear end on my 2001 ram 1500 4x4 with LSD started acting funny a while ago it would kinda lock up sometimes while turning sharp and then one drive its just did it really bad I limped my way home taking the longest turns possible but the damage was done,
My question what are my options? Is it as simple as just replacing the spider gears or should I do the clutches aswell, the big gear looks to be perfect and I could not see the pinion gear but im assuming its good aswell, I am currently looking for a whole other replacement axle because that is the quickest and simplest way in my opinion but I am not
against possibly rebuilding this one its a good way to learn and thats what I like,
Also am I correct that I have 3.92 gears? If so thats gonna make it harder to find a drop in rear end with LSD and 3.92 gears
There is a missing tooth on the top spider gear

You will need to pull the axles and center section out to fully inspect the ring gear and the pinion gear. If those are good and you can find the parts to rebuild the center section, that would be my choice forward. By chance, is that a disc brake rear?

It is not disk brakes, is it a hard job doing the spider gears?

Yes and no.....
Having the carrier out on the bench might make it easier. Sometimes, getting the spiders gears in after replacing the clutches and such, can be fun, but, it is eminently doable.

Im guessing the bearings and races are probably wore out from all the grinding probably too eh? Also on the ring gear where it says 392 is that my gear ratio? 3.92?

Yes, those should be 3.92 gears in that rear. If the rear was unmolested, there should also be a metal part number tag on a couple of the bolts on the inspection cover that provide the part number for the rear and its gear ratio.

Rear end was deffenitly not a virgin had silicone on the cover by the tag is missing, are the bearings usually pretty bullet proof in these im thinking of just rebuilding the center but im thinking the bearings may be done with all the metallic shavings on the oil
Bearings should be OK, unless the truck was driven awhile after the failure. When you pull the center section, check to see if there is any play in the pinion bearing by trying to move it from side to side and up and down. You will be able to readily see the carrier bearings to inspect them when you pull the center section.

Heres a question are the spider gears the same on the open rear ends then in the limited slip ones? Think im just gonna rebuild the whole axle and im not seeing any different gears for the limited slip it always just says open differential spider gears, I am looking on rock auto,
