The install instruction for one of the kits, (both of them? I think they both recommend it) will tell you where, and what size hole to drill.

Oh ok, I’m not sure when I’ll get around to ordering the parts, money is a little tight because I haven’t had many hours of work lately

Do you rely on this truck to get around regularly? I ask, as it takes a bit of time to rebuild these transmissions properly. Parts being readily available lately has been an issue, in addition to once you open up the transmission, you may find that you need a replacement hard part (drum, planetary, snap ring, etc.). If you need to drive the truck, do you have another 46RE core transmission that you can build while still driving your truck? I ran into this issue last year and my truck was down for several weeks after the rebuild process started. Luckily, I didn't have to have my truck during that time and I had other vehicles available to me to drive. I also had a very understanding friend who's lift I tied up while going through the rebuild process.

well the truck was a necessity to be working but it started breaking so much and so often that I gave up and started using my motorcycle or my dads truck since he works from home

Good move. Try not to rush the rebuild process. Do your homework on the rebuild process, take your time, do it once and enjoy the rebuilt transmission for many years to come.

that’s the plan, I’ve been doing as much research as possible, never pulled apart an auto before so this will be a big learning experience. I got in a motorcycle accident recently and severely messed up my hands so I’m just waiting until they heal enough for me to turn a wrench before pulling the trans and tearing it down.

There are quite a number of good YouTube videos out there that walk you through the process. There are also books that walk through the rebuild process as well, such as this one -

I am one of said folks... I ran through prolly 6 used 46's before finally just doing mine myself...best decision ever. As I now have the experience and a tranny that I have had 0 issues with for over a year now.
