On board air
Has anyone converted their a/c compressor to an on board air compressor? Back when I had a Toyota the group I was in a ton of guys had done this. Just wondering if any of you guys have done the same?
The older compressors, that actually had an oil sump, are better suited... There are many companies that make kits, or at least, sell various parts to set up on-board air, and let you keep your a/c. Having on-board air out on the trail can be a godsend. Air up tires, run air tools, blow up air mattresses, etc. Once you have one, you will wonder how you ever got along without it.
There's so much room in the engine compartment of a 2nd Gen that hanging a York off to the side should be a simple affair (if you have a welder). I'd hang it to the side and drive it by v-belt with an aftermarket pulley, typically from the alt.
That said there's probably also enough height under the hood you could remove the factory compressor and stand a York in it's place. It can be a little difficult to find serp clutches for the Yorks but it's kinda cleaner if it's driven off your serp.
I've also taken dual v-belt York clutches and machined them to accept a serp. Basically you cut out the center "wall" which would separate the two v-belts and add grooves for the serp grooves. IIRC a standard 60* threading tool was perfect.
And yeah, OBA is a "how did I survive without this" kinda thing. So nice to have infinite, quiet air and certain Yorks flow nearly as good as smaller 220V pumps.

You guys don’t think the factory dodge compressor would work I’ve seen guys adding oil separators and oilers to compressors (not a 2nd gen specific one) and making them work. Just curious if what I already have will work trying to keep it cheap.
A JY York shouldn't be spendy and they tend to out-flow anything and everything in the realm of a/c compressors

I keep a small air compressor in the truck that's powered by the cigarette lighter or alligator clips on the battery. Since my spare tire is 33" tall, the only way it fits under the truck is by deflating it, so I need a way to pump up the spare tire in the event of a flat.
At what PSI? And what is the duty cycle its rated for? (if that's at 90, that's pretty good....)
