Default Trying to burnout

Why is it that my 4.7l 4x4 sits at 2100-2200 rpm when stopped and trying to do a burnout with it to the floor? Is it just a computer thing, this type of vehicle can't spn the tires? What can I do?

mine will absolutely demolish my tire(s) but it isn't stock. I have a video of it doing donuts but its on instagram so I can't share it here. Made a helluva lot of smoke though..

Not sure on your dakota. but if it's a drive by wire setup it most likely has a restriction on it.

For example on my Titan (drive by wire) if the brake was pressed same time as the gas, only 10% of power is sent to the wheels. This is for safety/security reasons. Cause think of it.. something goes wrong, I'd hope the brakes would over-ride the power

But snip the red wire and (hopefully install an on/off switch for safety) and you can power brake all day!

But end of the day, a bit odd you can't roast your tires. My stock durango 4.7 can roast both tires (about 10k miles on cooper discover A/T) until 2nd gear..

2006, so no drive by wire. Your tires stock? Engine properly tuned up? Limited slip?

Yes, stock, and yes LSD, I don't have anything besides a dual air intake.

Not sure if I want to tune up this 4.7l or save up and get a 5.7L to put in it's place.

If I was going to keep this 4.7L, would have to have supercharger, good heads, big cam, dual exhaust

I never had a chance to try a burnout with my stock tires and LSD, but once I got my 20s and these sticky toyo proxes II's I could only do it in special cases. The 2006 has torque management but nothing to prevent a power brake burnout. Its just that the torque converter is so tight on these that they hold the engine back before it can get peak torque at around 3500rpm. The final gearing has a lot to do with it as well. My 3.55s gimp me so bad, I bet 3.92s would help, or an aftermarket 4.10 or 4.56

I bet if you got a stall converter with a 2600 to 3500 rating, you wouldn't have any trouble.

I was looking to get a 4.88 rear end, if that's possible.

Also you mean, install a new torque converter?

If you have a fly by wire throttle, leave your left foot on the brake pedal and gas it.

That's what I do, I'll try and get someone to record for me, and I'll post it. If I don't put my foot on the brake, like if it was wet outside, my rpms would jump and is burn rubber

I've heard some people had to grind just to fit 4.56 in there, depending on the brand. Unless you are going for some crawling, 4.88s may not fit and will be terribly impractical on freeway driving. Also, since you are 4wd, very expensive. But I bet a gear change to 4.56 and yea, a new torque converter with a higher stall rpm, you would be happy for a while.. And very prepared for that 5.7 swap if you are serious about it.

These suggestions are based on the assumption that you don't mind spending a bit of dough for serious upgrades. If you are on a budget, you may want to just start looking at bolt-ons and all the small things. They do add up to some good fun, that's for sure. But I for one, had all the bolt-ons and still had troubles breaking them loose. Damn 3.55s. It was still a quick truck though, beat a stock 05 impreza 2.5rs manual on a regular basis lol
