quick question.. in may bought an 06 with a hemi has 53k miles and time for an oil change and was wondering if it'll hurt the engine to switch to synthetic oil if it has only seen regular oil. does that make sense? is synthetic oil needed/worth it; all stock except for a 3865 super chip.

As long as the viscosity is the same, no. So if you use 5-20 regular oil the synthetic will be the same as long as you use the same weight. Only difference is how there made and from what. Sythetic being the better of the two

so yes it wouldn't hurt to run synthetic if it's never been used? thanks. and yeah i saw in the manual that 5w20 is needed.

Simple answer yes its fine to use no matter on how many miles you have on it. The vescosity is the same so it's not going to leak if that's what you have heard. It's the same thickness. Only difference is that synthetic lubes a hell a lot better

I would never run synthetic if your truck leaks. Synthetic oil is made of smaller molecules or whatever. Its ment to help the oil get to the top of the engine faster to limit the amout of metal on metal contact. but if the truck does not leak oil it doesnt matter if you switch between the two. just make sure you run 5W20.

Castrol GTX conventional 10W-30 with Fram ToughGuard filter.

I have a couple of questions, though:

1. I see that a lot of people don't seem to like Fram filters. I realize that all of this is personal preference, but is there a legitimate reason to avoid Fram? I always thought they were a pretty reputable brand.

2. I have a lot of sludge, and thought that doing a couple of changes at around 1K miles in addition to a cleaner such as MMO or Seafoam would help flush the junk out (which is why I decided to go with the cheaper conventional oil and save some $$$ until I can get it somewhat clean and then maybe switch to synthetic). Would this help speed up the process?

3. This one is more rhetorical than anything else... Unless I'm severely misinformed, how on earth is it that a 5.9L engine only takes 5qts???

Through the magic of YouTube, I have answered my own first question. Kind of scary how terribly made the Fram is... I don't believe I will be purchasing another one of those any time soon. Just goes to show that not all filters are made alike. But if you guys could answer my other questions, it would be greatly appreciated.

They may be, but my mother got free oil changes for as long as she owns the 2006 Caravan that she bought USED. Any dealer scam that's free is good in my book, It gets it every 3000. Has 198,000mi on it now, and have only done a ps pump on it. Do have to check underneith occasionally, and grease steering components, but with a conventional oil change now costing about $22 done myself, Ill let them do it, since she drives by there everyday anyways.

Anyway, I run Shell rotella 5-40 syn in everything but the neon, that gets 5-30 valvoline Syn all are changed every 5,000. Neon-250,700mi Ram1500-172,000mi.
