stacks on gas truck?

I just saw a relatively new Dakota in town saturday with stacks. Looked silly with puny pipes sticking up behind the cab, they couldn't have been more than 2" pipes.
Now back in the early 80's my father had an F250 gasser, real heavy duty truck. The old man is a welder/fabricator by trade and really liked the look of the Dodge 'Lil Red Truck of the time. He did stacks on his Furd and I thought it looked/sounded great although it would have been really killer if he had a step side bed.
That was almost 30 years ago though. That was then, this is now. You'll get laughed at and criticized for sticking a piece of chrome trim on your pickup anymore, so expect some ridicule.
And as stated above, forget the black smoke. Even the newer modern diesels meeting 2010 emissions standards don't get much of it anymore...
