I towed an 18' double axle flatbed with a loaded up Jeep Liberty strapped to it from San Antonio to the middle of Connecticut. I figured that was about 6000-7000 lbs, the only problems I had powerwise was through the Tennesee mountains.

Legally (and the tickets are quite high, at least in Georgia) and before your insurance company will deny a claim if you have a mishap or do you wanna know pure out how much the thing can pull?

6500 lbs travel trailer, 4 people in the cab and the bed full of gear. No issues really, except steep grades. Took a week long trip to Yellowstone and averaged 9 mpg during the tow portion.

Most I think I did was my 16ft trailer with a 1970 Olds Delta 88 on it.

The problem you are going to run into isn't what the truck CAN tow, but what the VIN # says maximum towing capacity is.

The man will pull you over in a heartbeat if he suspects you are towing over capacity, fine the hell out of you and make you unhook right on the side of the road and force you to make arrangements for a proper tow vehicle to come get the trailer. (at least in my state).

The other problem is that insurance companies have every legal right to deny any and all claims if you are towing over weight (again, by the VIN #). We've had a couple of members who are insurance agents/work for insurance companies come on and verify this in past threads. You could end up losing everything you own if you have a mishap towing over-weight if property damage results and God forbid someone is injured or worse...
